  • Talkin' 'bout Flakes....

Is it just my imagination, or are the sellers on fleabay getting worse? There's tons of XS parts listed (and mis-listed), but even when the description looks good it still seems to be a crapshoot.

I bought a NORS set of Standard front turn signals and got single-filiment rear units instead, although the seller sent me the correct set after it was pointed out (and told me to keep the other, 'wrong' set). I just got a set of Standard gauges (for $15!) but instead of the pictured 160 mph set he sent a 85 mph set with 30K more miles on it... not sure how that one's going to turn out yet.

The one good thing I've noticed lately is a lot of NOS parts are showing up (no bargains, but then again they ain't making 'em anymore...) as dealers clean out their old inventory. If you want to do a restoration, now's the time to look for those hard-to-find parts.

Yeah, and I wonder how much of a coincidence it is that both of these sellers are out of California...

I stopped selling on ebay, between the high fees for ebay and paypal and not getting any real bids. I just couldn't make a buck. Then you box it so it doesn't get wrecked, and that takes more time, ship it and the buyer doesn't even leave any feedback. It doesn't take long for people that aren't flakes to get sick of that. Lets face it parts that are really cheap are usually cheap for a reason. They are junk or the seller doesn't have a clue. If the seller doesn't have a clue then you get what you got.

I don't know about selling on there, as I have never even tried. But as for buying, I have almost always gotten good deals, and been pretty happy with what I got. The one or two times there were problems they got taken care of quickly. Then again I check the feedback before even considering buying from someone, and don't hesitate to use the negative feedback hammer if needed (only once did I need to actually give it, the threat is almost always enough, and most of the time I haven't needed even that).

I sold a set of chrome wire wheels to a guy on ebay. He stalled me for almost a month before finally paying. I had offered to meet this guy 200 mi ea way to save him shipping. Finally he had me ship them. A month later I found out he gave me bad feedback. Claimed the chrome was peeling on the rims. THE
CLEARCOAT WAS PEELING, THE CHROME WAS PERFECT. THE WHHELS WERE LIKE NEW. All he needed was a little stripper. He never corrected the feedback.

In Nov I bought a set of xs11 shocks for $3.00 at auction. Paid right now. Never got them.Sure, it was a steal. But when you list an auction you have to honor it. I sold vetter fairing for $15.00, because it was the only bid. Oh well HAPPY NEW YEAR

Well, I guess the gauge set turned out ok; the seller refunded my money (including shipping) so I got a free tach out of it.

I've had pretty good luck buying/selling on EBay; I cleaned out a 30 year collection of car parts a few years ago and did quite well (yes, I'm a terrible packrat). One thing they changed I don't agree with is the current inability of the seller to leave negative feedback on idiot buyers; you really have to spell it out for some people and even then they don't always know what they want.

And the poke at California was in fun, but it is in the song lyrics...

I agree and disagree on the sellers being able to give negative feedback. Unfortunately it solve a problem (but I don't think it was really the right way to do it) where if you gave a seller negative feedback, even after doing everything you could to fix things with the seller first (I'm talking about where the seller EARNED a negative feedback) they would give a negative to the buyer. There needs to be a way that a negative can be given either way, but that it can be challenged and overturned. I mean there was a problem that needed fixing, I just don't think that they went about it the right way.

I have bought and sold on ebay. Got some decent deals on stuff, had more than a couple send me something other than what I ordered.

From a selling standpoint, I've had decent luck. Stuff that sold went for decent price and had good luck getting paid and such. Have had trouble moving some parts though.

Ebay sucks my wallet dry on a regular basis but when you own stuff more than 30 years old, it can be the only place to find parts. Only had to sic Ebay on one seller and it got resolved. The majority of the stuff I have bought has been a good value or in some cases, not a great value but I needed/wanted it bad enough to pay the $$$. A recent aution on a complete NOS set of pickup coils w/plate & advance had me chomping at the bit and I went to $280 before throwing in the towel Set went for over $350. On the flip side, I have bought a perfect set of gauges w/160mph speedo for $15. I did win a new set of vent shades for my Olds for .01, shipping was $14 but still a smoking deal for me.
                            When a 10 isn't enough, get a 11. 80g Hardbagger

THAT is one of my favorite things about ebay...$1.99 for the part, $9.75 for shipping.

On the other hand, I have no idea how I'd get parts for an '83 XV500, an '84 ZX750A2, an '80 XS1100G, a '68 Chevy Malibu, or an '88 Bayliner 2150 without something like ebay. Really, it's incredible.
