  • Anyone in Oklahoma still riding?

I have found that I can tolerate down to mid 30's with only my hands getting cold. Rode to work Monday and yesterday, but didn't chance it this morning with low 20's. Anyone have any tips, besides heated gloves or grips? I do wear two pairs of gloves, cotton inner liners topped with leather "shells".

I ride quite abit up here in mo, about the same weather, might at times get a bit cooler, just keep the wind off your skin, one little spot and you will louse heat.
bandana round my neck, sometimes on my face, full face helmit, chaps, long johns, big cuff gloves that cover my wrist, a good coat that blocks the wind, one of these days i want to try some of those heated gloves, butt sometimes i am just a p**s and drive my pickup, lol

I use a ski cap with the top cut off, for around the neck on cold days. Keeps the wind from getting up in there. You can fold it over once or twice to make it the correct height. Don't forget the emergency insulation, stuff your sleeves and jacket with crumpled up free newspapers that can be found anywhere, BTDT.

Mittens with wool gloves for liners, A pair of thick wool socks with hole cut out for thumb inside leather or rabbit fur mittens has kept my hands warm into the 20s. A pair of waterproof rain mittens over my gloves turned a painful ride in sleet, followed by drizzle and snow into Cozy warm hands for me. Might not have been able to make long ride home otherwise.

I have heard of some making wind deflectors (similar to hand guards on dirt bikes) out of 2 liter plastic bottles. have not tried it.

Beware the signs of hypothermia. Heed the painful warning of impending frostbite. Watch out for shiny pavement.

Thanks for the replies, guys. My coat zips up past my mouth and I do wear a full face helmet, so head and neck are good to go, just my hands. I guess I will have to stop in at the bike shop and see what they have to offer. Brent-lotsa dirt bike riders around here and I have seen the deflectors your talking about, good idea, man.

I used to put a full size windscreed/fairing on in the winter with the bump outs pushing wind around the bars on the bike for winter and ride everyday unless ice or snow. That and heavy mittens with liners underneath kept my hands warm. But it's just to much work anymore to get that suited up to go to work. I just hop in the escort and get nearly the same mpg. Gives me something to look forward to in spring.

Stoked, I have a full size Vetter, but no bump outs, rode again this morning as it was 42 degrees and fog/drizzle over here. Tulsa is crazy enough in a car, on a bike would be a little nerve wracking.

I ride year round here in Owasso. When it's gonna be all day on the bike and cold I have a pair of ski pants I wear instead of chaps, blocks the wind better. I have a leather jacket with a wind proof liner (HD), ski gloves with hand warmers. Full face helmet and I'm good to go.

                    Still riding

I was out today and will do about 70 miles tomorrow.
Temperature in mid to high thirties.
My outfit varies, but it is usually something like this.
Two pairs of socks in the army boots with covers if it rains.
Thin thermal longjohns, warm commie made sweat pants and bib sailing pants that do not leak.
Thin thermal top over a T shirt, an alpalca long sleeved shirt, Cosco fuzzy jacket, puffy vest ( $20- at thrift store ) and a raincoat, heavy duty unit for sailing.
I will often wear a scarf or neck warmer.
For gloves if it is raining I use the insulated orange fishing gloves, with thin wooly gloves inside if it is cold. Otherwise ski gloves.
I also have insulated boots and sometimes wear bib ski pants.
I do not ride Yami in snow or ice, it is too heavy for that job.
BUT, the best thing for cold weather riding IMO, is the full Vetter fairing. Never had one until this year, never rode a bike this heavy either. Always used something like a 250 dirt bike for winter riding with appropriated tyres.
Wet hands and feet are the biggest problems.
Stay warm, do not let yourself slowly cool down, unless you have years of self sacrifice. You may not recognise the signs. It is the same as sailing at night. If you are way too hot before you fire up the bike, that is good.
