I have a 79 xs1100 s.
What year rear wheels will fit I'm looking at an 80 or 81 will they fit?
Any of the wheels will interchange from any year 11. That being said there is a little more to it as well. If by s you mean you have a special (really it would be an SF) then you currently would have a 16"wheel. So any XS or perhaps even an XJ 16" wheel would be a straight swap. You could also switch to a 17" wheel from the standards but you MUST take all the spacers and everything and put them in in the same order as they where in on the donor bike (has to be done the same why if you are going from a 17" to a 16" as well).

In any moment of decision the best thing you can do is the right thing, the next best thing is the wrong thing, and the worst thing you can do is nothing.
All the years of 11 Special rear wheels (16") will bolt right up. The early ones are the straight mag spoke type and the later are the swirly mag spoke type. All of them are tubeless rims.
I'll add to what Nate said and say that any XS/XJ11 wheel will interchange. As will most of the XS750/850 wheels (the 750 rear being an exception for some reason). As Nate said, a like-size-for-like-size swap (16" for 16", 17" for 17") in the rear is a straight swap, no additional parts needed.
But if you do a 16" for a 17", or the other way, you will need the correct spacers as Nate said AND the correct steel caliper bracket or your rear brake caliper won't line up properly. For some reason when Yammy came out with the Special with it's smaller 16" rear wheel, they machined the new wheel with the rear brake rotor .300" further out, so you need the matching parts to get everything to line up properly.

I picked up a rear wheel from a 80 special for 30 bucks the bearings and rim are in great shape.
I took the original wheel to my local inde to have the bearing taken out so I could powder coat the rim and they broke the bearing. Hell I could have beat it out.
I also bought another one for 15 bucks. As hard as it is to get that bearing I want back up.
The front wheel from an XS650 will also drop right in.
The cast wheels will fit disks and all, as will the post '77 wire wheels.
The nice aluminum rim wire wheel from a '75 will need XS11 disks because it's own disks are dished to a different depth and won't line up with the XS11 calipers.
Same as the XS750/850 disks won't fit because they have a smaller OD.

OK, Yamaha did make one shaft-drive bike that used a laced wheel that would fit the XS, but they only made 200 of them, and only sold them in Japan. So your chances of getting one of these are slim and 'see above'....

What rear wire wheels would fit? Is the post above just for the front?
Hi Mark,
like my post sez:- Want a wire wheel up front?
And to abbreviate what Steve sez:- Fuggedabout finding a rear wire wheel that'll fit.
But what you can do is this:-
Cut the hub out of a cast rear, turn it to a tidy shape with two locations to weld on two spoke rings drilled to suit your choice of aluminum rim and then lace the rim on.
Not difficult. Not cheap neither.
