  • Truncated VIN a no go in CT. Idears?

I just bought a XJ1100J from a seller in NY. The NY DMV used the truncated VIN in the title. When I went to the CT DMV they rejected the title saying it was not the full 17 character VIN and told me to contact NY to get them to fix it and that their job is not to call the NY DMV about it.

I feel like a ping pong ball in a tournament. I'm 125 miles from NY and would like to know how others have resolved this before I make myself a lot more trouble.

    Idears?

    Thanks,

    Gary

Not sure how it will work for you, but I had a similar issue pop up on my SH bike. Funny thing is, the first SH I got had a 17 digit VIN on the white label on the steering head. The second one, only had 13 digits. No where on the bike is there a 17 digit VIN. DMV did not give me any trouble, but insurance took some convincing.

The way I understand it is, 1981 was the year that the new, longer VIN numbers took effect. My '81 has the short VIN, and it took some convincing for the insurance to accept that, but the DMV had no problem. Does your XJ have the 17 digit VIN on it? I would involve the Highway Patrol or find some kind of inspector in your state to verify the VIN and make some kind of certification.
