Minor differences in the frame, mostly mounting tabs for rear footpegs, seat mounts, different style fenders. Different enough so these parts are not interchangeable, and you can end up with a combination of standard and special parts on either frame. XJ frame is diferent from the others in the same areas.

The XJ sits a bit lower than the XS standard, as it it patteren after the Specials. The XJ has a larger tank than the Special, but the stock XJ seat is terrible for long-distance rides. The XJ was sold only 1 model year in the US (1982) and for a few more years in Canada and other countries. Because of trim, electrical, and gauge differences this makes getting parts and accessories for the XJ a little more difficult than for the other Yamaha 1100s. For example, front calipers are unique to the XJ; XS calipers won't fit due to mount differences on the fork tubes. No K&N filter for stock XJ airbox. Major components, (rims, transmission, drive shaft and rear suspension) are interchangeable. Some engine differences, like leaner-jetted carbs and handlebar-mounted choke on the XJ, can be overcome by swapping in a few XS parts should you want to put the XJ motor in an XS frame. "Black Box" (ignition) is different on the XJ.

There are a lot of XJ owners on this list and we like our bikes a lot. However, realize they are a bit different animal than the XS Standard or Special.
