That thing is beautiful! Did the bike come with all the luggage from the dealer, or is it aftermarket?

While it's clearly an 80 based on the seat and side covers, I don't think the color is original, as that's a pretty nice looking macho maroon (or pretty close match) which I don't recall as being available in 80. I don't think the pacifico fairing and dresser setup was an 80 option either, so that may have come from a 78 or an 81. Now I could be wrong, I've been that often enough, and I have been known to get pretty stupid when typing, which goes along with the finger dislyxea that I have (what my fingers type is not always what I told them to, even though I touch type).

I have to agree though, it's one beatiful ride!

That could be the seldom-seen "Magenta Red' from '79 too; there wasn't much difference between that and the '78 'Macho Maroon'. The '78 and '79 used the same tour pack except for color...

Which would still not be an original 80 color, and it's clearly an 80 based on the seat, side covers and tank. Everything but the color and touring pack says 1980. Unless it's a frankenbike, then all bets are off.

                  Sweetest Ride 80' XS1100 G

                  Hey Guys,
Far as I listened to the old man. this is original 80' paint..I did a bunch (hrs.) of digging on the internet... And actually confirmed the paint by finding an old Yamaha add "Flyer" for 1980 & to my suprise there was the maroon XS1100. The side bags are factory They match to a "T"..the paint. the top one is aftermarket you can see the paint color is off next to the bike. It has not been repainted the paint now shows at close up some crackling.. The fairing not sure when that was put on..But that matches also. I am the 3rd owner the old man didnt mention anything. 1st yr I was told for the auto turn signals, Cruise & Quarts headlamp..It is VERY bright @ night!! I have done some 1980 Yamaha pictures on google & have seen maybe 2 others like this out of hundreds of photos..Dealer sticker on the rear fender shows it was sold from a Yamaha dealer 30 miles from my house..(still in business). So It has stayed within this area.
He was asking 1600$ on Craigs list & when I got to see it he said he'd take 1500$ the battery was bad..So gave it a new battery & oil change..& Ive been on the road since..No 2nd or 4th gear problems..He even thru in the XS1100 fours 1978-81' service, repair & maintenance manual. with it..It is all stock Nothing touched..now has 27,500 miles on it..
So not sure why that Suzuki Bandit was'nt keeping up within 1/2 a mile.. may have only been a 600 bandit..would like to do or have work done to it...I have the tools but not the the knowledge..
So bought this as you see it... I have just sent pics in for the 2011 calender..But need to take some pics with a nice background..according to the write up..Gotta get busy on that..Western NY has Beautiful scenery..And as the saying goes..." CAN'T TOUCH THIS "......LOL!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Great find, and you still have about 80K miles before you NEED to "hotrod" it! Look into the Tkat fork brace for the bike. It makes a WORLD of difference on handling! Oh, and welcome too the madness!
Cy, that fairing isn't a Pacifico, as far as I know, It MAY be a Pacifico clone of the Vetter, but I'm not sure. If it has a 9 pin electrical connection, it's Vetter. The 12 pin is Pacifico.

That's interesting as Craig Vetter doesn't admit to having made any fairings for Yamaha. He did make some for Kawasaki, and does say that several other manufacturers made knockoffs, but I can find no record of Vetter Made Fairings badged with the Yamaha name.

I don't think Yamaha neccesarily had 'clean breaks' between model years, as I've personally seen supposedly unmolested bikes that didn't quite match their 'official' specs. A case in point, I bought a "79" standard parts bike (and it was serial numbered as such) that after I got it home, turned out it was equipped the same as a '78 (tube wheels, non-halogen headlight) but painted the '79 color. Bit of a bummer, as I was after the tubeless wheels..

I've also run into other oddball bits; my '78 has a chrome 'emergency kick' lever, the "79" one is zinc plated, there's two different 7-spoke front wheel castings, and two brake rotors I found that are machined different for some reason.

You might have a real 'rarity'

I have noticed that myself. The Pacifico's are obviously different from the later, Yamaha-branded fairings, but all the lines are identical to the Vetter Windjammer, except the placement of the signals. Vetter has mentioned that several places tried to copy his designs, so maybe Yamaha was one of those. However, most parts and pieces for the Windjammers should interchange freely with the Yamaha fairings.
