  • Unbelievable insurance bs!!!!!!

Get this. I was pretty sure I had insurance coverage for my 78 XS11 (the modifies bike) set up until today when my insurance agent called me and told me they could not cover the bike in the same fashion as my 79 bike was covered. WHY? According to them the bike is a "CUSTOM" bike that would need a separate policy of it's own. That would of course cost 2 times the rate I pay for the 79 bike and the full payment would be required up front. WHY is the bike a "CUSTOM" bike? Because I installed the engine and parts myself as compared to them being installed at the factory?
I told the agent that it was a crock of you know what and if true at least 50% of all cars, trucks and bikes on the road must also be "CUSTOMS" because many have be repaired and maintained by their owners which involves REPLACING PARTS AS NECESSARY. It goes without saying that this agent will as a result of his stupidity, loose the insurance I have with them on ... my house, my travel trailer, my boat, my truck and my bike or bikes. So, with the insurance placed back on my 79 bike, which I also build pretty much from scratch and have removed and replaced every nut and bolt myself, there is no rush to paint the finish my 78 bike. My insurance does not renew until Oct when I will change to a different carrier.
    VERY PISSED OFF

Not sure how it all works in the land up nort', down in the states, at least this state, there are several...lets call them...idiosynchracies...of the insurance game. Easy to get tangled up in them. But, your agent should know how to work around them and get you taken care of.

All he had to do was insure the bike as a 1978 XS1100 which it is. Given that I do not take fire / thief or collision insurance on my bikes, I have no idea why he asked what the bike was worth and even wanted me to fax the sales receipt to him as proof of value??? He became fixated on the idea that the bike was only worth about 400 dollars which is the cost of the engine and frame from different sources. The thing is even safetied.
I guess some people were put on this earth to complicate things and piss on everyones parade.

I think he is working for the company, and NOT you as an agent should. Dropping him is a VERY GOOD call. He feels the loss in his pocket that way. I would also try to steer people away from him in the future, but that's just me....

Strange since looking mine up online for value ranges between 1400 and 1700 for it, and that's down here where I understand they sell for less than up there, that sure seems like a crock to me.

Insure the bike through Haggerty. I have my IROC insured through them at a value of $7500.00 for $178.00 a year.

The least amount of coverage they would insure my bike was $3500.00.

            They like "Custom" customers. Roy

                Insurance is painful

                Hey, Rob.

Have you tried TD Meloche Monnex? I've found them to be way cheaper for bikes than anyone else, and they will insure everything else for you as well. I did have a bit of a hassle when I first called to insure my SG because it was 30 years old. The first guy I spoke to for a quote wanted to insure it as a classic and was going to need an appraisal and a whole bunch of other hassle before he would even discuss how much it was going to cost me! I called back a few minutes later and got a friendly girl who just gave me a quote hassle-free, and there were no problems when I activated the policy.

If these guys are who you're with now, you may want to just try calling back and seeing if you get someone useful... maybe you ended up talking to the same jerk that I was.

                Good luck!

I am not currently with ether of the outfits that are named here. I also do not want to shot myself in the foot so before I cancel my current policies with my current carrier I have to be sure that the rate will be better for everything I insure. I have not shopped for insurance in close to 10 years so I am hoping that I can find a better deal across the board. My current carrier is economical but this issue is with an agent of the broker.
In any case ther body parts take up a lot less room installed on the bike then in the garage so I will be painting them after all and will do it tomorrow after work.

So the lad that I Spock to at TD went over everything and left the bike as the last item to gather details about. 1/2 an hour after starting the phone interview / quote process it turns out that according to him, they can't insure a motorcycle that is over 30 years old. Did you try threatening your current carrier that you are about to pull all your policies if they can't make this right with you? Make sure you tell this to the "manager" if there is one or the owner of ypur agency if it isnt your agent. Seems to me like you have some leverage being with them for ten years and all the various types of policies, its in their best interest to keep you around. I would pursue that angle first and a new agent second. My insurance company just kellybluebook'ed the value of my bike, no need for me to prove the actual value of my bike...

I had no issue really with getting my 79 XS750 insured with TD. They just had to insure it as 79 YAMAHA - OTHER as thier system didn't have any info on bikes older than 80. They also wanted to verify 3 times that the "VIN" was actually that short.
