Found 81sh for sale here local

I saw an ad here local for an 81 midnight special on a local internet classifieds for $1295. So I called him and went to look at it incase any of you guys and gals are interested. First it is a 81SH, it has nice 4-2 pipes that stop right in front of the axle nut. both side covers seem unbroken. it would be a good project bike.
He did start it up and it fired first try. With the tropical storm rain I could not test ride it. He has only ridden it around close to his house. I asked about 2nd gear and he said it did not jump. It does need new tires and the rear grab rail assy. He planned on fixing it up and keeping it, but is in a bind and needs to sell it. I would offer him $600 and see if he jumps. he does not know much about bikes. It needs other things fix. if any one is interested, let me know and I can go into more detail, and maybe go test ride it if someone is really interested. I would love to get it for SWMBO, but I am broke too...lol

after looking at it.. It sounds bad. He is a good guy but has low working knowlege about this bike... not that he is stupid or anything.

I looked at a 1980 standard this weekend that was in pretty good shape. It had 19,000 miles and everything looked like it had been taken care of: all paint was shiny, the matching detatchable bags and trunk looked good, Vetter fairing and windshild good too, but he wanted $2000.
