...and if it aint in the computor it doesnt exist...
I paid for the part and left, vowing never to deal with that kid ever again. As I left, the kid was still protesting his innocence, and stating that the Ford he was looking at was the same car as the Mazda, and all the parts were the same.
Hey I had a ford escort, w\power locks btw. Anyways reminds me of when I went to get Transfer case fluid for my truck. I got the darn thing drained and was sure it took ATF, though to double check and needed GM part number something or other. So I go to the parts store - sorry dealer only - which means 20 bucks a quart. So I go to the dealer and ask for Transfer case fluid for a 2001 blazer, the guy asks me, whats the part number?
I say I don't know, cant you look it up, its a 2001 blazer 4x4.
Him: Sorry I have to have the part number
Me: I don't have the part number, thats why I'm here.
Him: The only way to get the right fluid is with the part number of the fluid.
Me: The fluid I drained out didn't have a part number on it anymore
Him Looking very serious: Yeah, right, well what about your owners manual, it should be in there
Me lying now to press the point: Its a 10 year old truck, it was lost before I got it.
Him: I can look that up and get you one, then you'll have the number.
Me: ok go grab one and we'll look up the part number.
Him: Sorry, if you want to use it you'll have to buy it. They are 29.99.
Me: Um, no thanks. If you can't look it up how do your service techs know what to put in?
Him: They look in the owners manual.
Me: what if there isn't one?
Him: I don't know, I'm not a tech.
Me: Well I guess that explains the problem, isn't it your job to find part numbers, and doesn't it make your job redundant if you have to have the part number to find the part number.
This little play went back and forth for about 20 minutes until I was sick of dealing with him. Mind you this wasn't the standard 17 year old kid but a 30 somthing man that looked as if he'd been sitting behind that counter eating donuts for a very long time. Then I asked for his boss, boss opens the door and waves at a service guy, asks what fluid for my truck, took all of 30 seconds to get the answer.
service guy says: oh all the transfer cases all take the same stuff, there's only one kind on the shelf, but its like 18 bucks a quart, we just put ATF in them.
I said thanks and went home and filled it up with ATF. After that everytime I went in that same guy was there and I just asked for his boss, never even bothered talking to him again.

....blah blah blah I'm smarter than the dude who's 30 jockeying the counter at the parts house blah blah blah...
Nice work, you learned an important lesson and made a large important step: Find a parts guy that's intelligent (you did this), and now deal with him from now on.
...nyah nyah nyah nyah I fooled the parts guy with something that wasn't OE nyah nyah nyah nyah!!!!
I broke down and went the Chevy dealer, put the part on the counter, and the guy didn't even look it up; just went and got one. Of course, I paid three times as much for it...
And that's exactly why the part was 1/3 the price at unnamed parts house.
Can't say that I've ever gone to any parts counter that asked for my VIN. If they did I'd take my business elsewhere as the VIN of the vehicle I'm getting parts for is none of their business and frankly they don't need it to find the part unless I don't know what the part came from.
Sometimes knowing the VIN is the difference between getting the right part and the wrong part. Maintaining your privacy is much much more important than getting the right part.
Warmest Regards,

Nowadays they need the VIN because they are built in different plants in different countries which in-turn use totally different parts along with mid year changes etc.... so if they aren't asking for your VIN, you might get home with the wrong part. Even my early build Firebird, 3rd week of February 1967, has some totally different parts then the ones built in April 1967.
Maintaining your privacy is much much more important than getting the right part.
I like privacy but Im not sure how it plays a role here. Sure someone could look the vin up but presumably its a legal vehicle anyway. If not dont give it....but I have yet to walk into a parts store or sit at my comp with a vin number handy. Have to be a special part.
CRAP MAN!!!!......anyone can walk up and look at the VIN , it's right there in the windshield on the left side of your dash! It's no freakin' secret. Some vehicles even have it etched into the glass and other parts for identification if the car is stolen and stripped.
It's not like it's you social security number or something.
I bet y'all shred advertisements that come in the freakin' mail just because it's got your name and address on it too, don't you? How the hell do you think it got there?
LOOK OUT.......THE PARANOIDS ARE RIGHT BEHIND YOU!!!!

I'm just pokin' fun and joking around. No offense intended.
I'm just glad i'm smarter then that idiot parts guy
