  • My Dad Just Scored

My Dad just scored this 81 (special??) The guy couldn't get it to run but he bought it anyway for 350.00. Looks like I'll have 2 to work on now. It will be nice riding with him though. It's been a long time.

You and your dad like to ride, that's pretty cool.
Looks like a special to me, hope you have the side covers as the 81's are a little harder to find. Also would not keep it in the back of the truck very long as some people might think you have a harley

Well Sh!t! I was hoping he could find a couple covers from someone on the forum. I wasn't aware they were hard to find. He drove over 100 miles to get it. The pics were from the seller but he did trailer it home. He had a MNS years ago and that's how I became interested in the 1100. I'm the only one of 5 kids that rides so it is pretty cool. I really think he wanted my XJ when he loaned me the money for it. He never stops talking about it whenever he sees it. I hope we can get his on the road this year, before he makes me an offer I can't refuse on mine. How do you tell your father NO?
Well if anyone has a line on a couple side covers please let me know.

          Rob,
Clean the carbs, put on NEW tires, a TKat fork brace, and your dad should be riding soon. The side covers you will have to keep an eye out for. I think Special Ed MAY have an '80 or '81 side cover that does NOT fit the '79 he rides. You may be able to get that one, if you can find a '79 to trade with him!
          Good score at $350!

Nice find! Looks like it's almost all there, so you should be able to get it in riding condition in no time. I don't have the left side, but I do have a right side cover from a MNS that I'd sell to you. It has the MNS emblem on it though, if that matters to you. PM me if you're interested.

Hmmm... Methinks those words are not often bragged about by a son..

Congrats on the find, and having a dad with enough sense to know a motorcycle from a V-twin.

Got the side covers taken care of. MAN! The people here are FANTASTIC.
Went and looked at the Bike today IP. It's not as bad as my XJ when I first bought it. Needs the normal thing for a bike sitting for 10 years. Rear Brakes are locked. Front ones don't work at all. The carbs will have to come off to be checked. PO said he had them rebuilt but you know how that goes. Tires are shot. Surprisingly the tank is super clean inside but a small ding on the left side. It has a MAC 4-1 exhaust (I believe) but the header is really REALLY blue but still solid. The center stand is missing because of the exhaust I believe. It will need a seat or at least a new cover. If I could convince him to bring it here he might get it back on the road this season. I know there are a few electrical bugs also. None of the gauges light up when you turn the key on. They did when i first got there. The original fuse box is still on it. So we'll be taking a better look at that too. I'm sure there will be a few questions coming. It's a little different than my XJ. Thanks CAT-BUG for the manual. And TIA to everyone for the help.

p.s. I'll get some pics up ASAP

Yeah, that's going to happen no matter how well it's tuned. The MAC systems are single walled pipe and the stock ones are double walled, so the chrome doesn't get nearly as hot with them VS aftermarket ones like MAC or Jardine.

Very cool that you two will be able to ride together, and it sounds like he got a great deal too.
