I just got home yesterday with broken leg number 2. As many of you know I had a mishap in feb 09 and broke my left leg. After 6 months of healing the doc told me it wasnt set straight and he had to break it again. I stalled during summer and finally agreed to have it done this month, so I could spend winter indoors. Sounded like a good plan at the time but now not so sure. Booked into a private hospital on Tuesday, had surgery the same day, Thursday morning the doc tells me he's not happy with alignment and needed another go, so on Thursday another general aneastetic, more surgery, 2 plates and 9 screws later I apparently have a straight leg. Came home yesterday feeling like crap and now have the next 6 to 8 weeks of sitting on my arse with my laptop, blackberry and tv for company. Oh Joy.

WOW, I feel your pain, literally!!!! As I sit here on week 7 of my 8 weeks waiting on bones to grow. Finally getting off of all the pain meds. That Oxy crap sucks!! I hope I never have to take that crap again. For me it has been double whamy as I also broke my collar bone at the same time, so I can not use crutches yet. Wheelchairs are REALLY no fun after the first couple days!
I have also learned the hard way that here in the USA, that little wheelchair symbol that indicates a rest room is ADA accessible apparently is applied by whomever wants to go buy it. Cause a person in a wheelchair will NOT fit into half of those places!! Or through some of the doors needed to get to that accessible bathroom in the first place. Then you get creative and hop to the door so someone can fold your wheelchair to get you in, and some idiot hung the diaper changing station on the wall so now your wheelchair will not fit through there to the ADA stall. Interestingly enough, since I am now left handed only for another week or so anyway, it has been very interesting to see how many left handed ADA stalls there are, not very many.
OK, rant over. Anyway Brian, yeah, it sucks!! For me I can not drive until I get my right leg back. So I actually look forward to going shopping with SWMBO, just to get out of the house!:eek Hope your time passes quickly!!Life is what happens while your planning everything else!

Been there,
done that. I feel for both of you guys. Be careful with it no matter how hard cause the alternative is way worse. Laid up for a year, extended hospitital stay or god forbid, amputation. Don't push it and we'll see you guys on the trail soon.'81 1100 MNS - "Midnight XSpress"

We dont have the same issues with Wheel Chair access in toilets here, in fact we're entirely the other way. Sometimes i think the building inspectors think wheelchairs are made my Mack or Kenworth or something, or they go through doors two at a time. When you see the size of the regulation door openings you think WHY.. wheelchairs just arent that friggin wide.. and then when you get inside you find theres only ONE pan, there's room for ten, and support crew, but there's only ONE. We do have the occasional oddly placed handle or change station etc, but they usually get ripped from the wall by some irate and/or ill mannered disabled person and left on the floor as a nun too subtle message to the building owner that it was in the wrong place. I dont think they realise the true upper body strength of the long term wheel chair bound.
I feel for the wheelchair bound, I really do, and here at least they get catered for really well (joys of being a small country is that it's relatively easy to police regulation) but building owners and developers are faced with sometimes crippling compliance costs to ensure disabled access to public buildings and somewhere along the line common sense has to prevail and rules worked out to benefit all parties involved, not just one. Wait a minute, I think I'm talking about Utopia, nah scratch that, it'll never happen, what am I saying, common sense and rules in the same sentence, nah, pipe dream.Last edited by b.walker5; 04-25-2010, 05:04 PM.1980 SG. When I was in the hospital they had me on an IV with delodin. That stuff just kept me asleep or in pain, no real in between. When I got to rehab they put me on oxycodene. They cut the dose in half when I left. Then two weeks later, I had to stop cold turkey from there. I spent four days in torture. Felt like crap, no pain, but ugly times.
I am fortunate, in a week or so my time in a wheelchair will be over, maybe two to three weeks at most. Then crutches at the worst. Some will never make it out of a chair. They are the ones who truly suffer.Life is what happens while your planning everything else!

Get your self a little back pack to carry your stuff around in. Crutches give you better mobility but they tie your hands up so you cant carry stuff. Last time round I made a little plastic tray with nylon straps that went around my neck and waist, so the tray sat on my waist, hung out in front of me at 90 to my chest. Glued a couple of styrene cups to it to put stuff in, and as a drinks holder. It was great for carrying drinks and meds and stuff from the kitchen to the lounge, only other way was to have conveniently placed chairs or tables so I could relay stuff round the house. Went looking for my tray this morning but I think my wife threw it out. Just have to make another one.1980 SG. (Sold - waiting on replacement)

Could he or they not have checked the alignment before the leg was fully healed? Makes one wonder doesn't it

Awful sorry to here about the leg. I recovered from a triple bypass, and it was the pits. I didn't even get to come downstairs for three weeks. Partialy cause i couldn't. Then i found out that the triple bypass did not include the artery that gave me the heart attack. It's like rebuilding only seven cylinders of a V8, and calling it good. Had another sttack in that same artery a year and a half later. Now it is full of stints, and i have a 65% chance of it plugging. I am just jumping up and down with joy thinking about them cracking my chest open again. I feel for ya, and may it heal quick, and work smooth.1980 XS1100LG Midnight
