If it is one of those 6 then it seems alot more likely to be ready for the ride. If it is still going for the prices he had listed, which is entirely up to you if it is worth it or not, then it dang well BETTER be ready for the trip!! I'd tell him for that price he needs to pay any repairs needed if something does go wrong.

Ok heres the skinny....The bike is in Kansas City area...its been advertised for a while...1 of a collection of 6 all supposedely worked on/maintained by Bob Jones of Merriam Cycles. I dont have the seller's address yet and i am awaiting him to respond to an earlier email about more detailed pics and proof of title...ONCE I get some real contact info...I'll ask if anyone in the KC area could give it a lookover. Its not that i dont trust anyone here...it just did not occur to me to ask. The '81 venturer is a rare bird indeed...thus if this ad and bike are legit...then i'll want first dibs...

1000 miles

Thats not to far. I went to Reno, from Texas to get the Cruise Missle. About 1400 miles one way. I wanted to ride it home, but glad I didn't. It was 6 degrees in Flagstaff when I came back through. I think you aught to have someone check it out for you. Just my 2 cents. I would have never bought The Cruise Missle if people on this site hadn't vouched for it.

I say to have a little faith in your fellow man. Ask if there's someone that can go look at it. 99.9% of the people would never screw you over and would gladly help you out. Quit worrying about that .1% and ask for help. Could you even FATHOM someone asking YOU to look at a bike for them.. and you go over there and buy it and keep it for yourself instead?

Our little XS community seems to have some pretty decent folks... except that one guy, Greg, in Tulsa. Anyone that did that to you would be ridiculed to no end. What fun would it be to have a 30+ year old bike that you couldn't ride with others like it? And worst case scenario... it may take a couple years, but there'll be another one come up for sale that you like. And like you said.. you already have two bikes.. it's not like you NEED it to be able to ride.

You're talking of spending a lot of money just because you can't trust anybody. Most on here love the chance to help.. to pay it forward. Let them help... have them ride it around and take lots of pics for you and give you an honest assesment of it as to whether they think it would make it or not. Keoki in Austin looked one over for me a couple times, and lots have done it for others.

Between the cost of a one way ticket to this "city" and riding back 1000 miles plus travel expenses ...would be very close in cost to having a motorcycle shipper deliver it. As for trading the Maxim for your old van...No...LOL But thanks for the laugh... However due to the limited storage space I have...I might need to sell of one of my other bikes as i just dont need 3 bikes.

You coulda made it.

You could also fly there and if it's roadworthy, ride it. If it isn't, rent a u-haul 10' truck and pull it inside. May also check to see if there is a member in the area who isn't looking to buy and have them scope it out for you. I know I would if it were within reasonable distance.
