[QUOTE=randy;269292]Bad news...starter clutch still no good WTF? New springs and rollers, polished the gear boss and everything looked and worked well on the bench, but it slips when I hit the button. It did work once today, though It'll spin the motor like a sonofabitch with the plugs out, but under compression it balks. I give up. QUOTE]

Tsunami tends to do this a bit early or late in the season, when its 20W50 Castrol is at its thickest. Through the middle of summer, when the temps are up, the problem pretty much goes away. I've decided to put it down to the oil being a bit too thick to let the rollers grab consistently like they should when it is cold. Not to try to start yet another oil thread, but what weight are you using.

Honest, I don't want this to morph into an oil thread, just trying to pass on some of my observations.

Castrol 20W50. The only oil I've ever used in my bikes. Do you think that the clutch may get better as it gets lubed? I haven't tried it since this morning when I first got it running again.

Same here as far as oil brand/weight goes. I've kind of half thought some time about switching to a lower viscosity to see what happens, but that seems like a waste of good oil because my 'cold season' riding is so limited.

          Hey, Randy...

          Happy Birthday, Dude!

I just got back from a most XSive weekend of intense riding on the old XJ... excellent weather... good company... and the bike logged 451 flawless miles and averaged 36 mpg... mostly between speeds of 75-85 mph on the turnpike...

Just now got home and saw it was your birthday.... sorry to hear your starter's still giving you grief. Hope ya find it's cure soon.

Hope you had a Happy Birthday!

It did work once today, though
There was but 11,433 miles on the clock of the engine that part came from.
            Looked good to me
Sorry to hear it's a problem.

No, Mike, I don't think it was your part that was bad, I replaced the springs and rollers and the boss was good, just needed a little clean-up. It's a jinx!

Bob, there will be NO fix, I am NOT splitting the cases again. I'll kick it till my leg falls off.
