  • Just a rant!!!!

Rode my XJ650 yesterday, and got really po'd when i realized that it ran through the rpm range twice as good as my XS11. I guess the only reason that this bothered me so much is that if i could get the XJ650 to run this well, then why the heck can't i do it to my XS11. The 650 will run right up, and over the red line without missing a lick, but the 1100 has trouble going over 5000. I'll get that sucker right yet, or i'll ride the 650.

    Hi Robert,
if you've done all the "make it go properly" tricks to be found here to no avail, try psychology.
Ride the XS11 to the scrapyard and ask it:-

Check and adjust valves, Clean and sync carbs ...! Two cylinders are much less touchy. Get her right and you will forget you own a twin.

Just got through pulling my carbs again. I reset the float level at 23MM, and rechecked the wet level. The level is just about perfect. I had to raise the floats quite a bit, and figured that the wet level would be way off. Made me a gauge out of a credit card so it would span both sides. Worked great for float setting. Best use of a credit card i ever saw. LOL Will reinstall carbs tomorrow, and test. Keeping my fingers crossed.

hey there xs1100 newbie......not all is as it seems in XS land...don't believe the manual or bad ju-ju may curse you to the land of "no bikey runney-land".....do the carbs run upside down?!......H*LL NO!!!.....then explain to me why the procedure to check the float levels is that way......found a better way to check 'em out (more reliable as far as i'm concerned!).....here is the link to when i re-did the carbs on the "rebel devil".....

Hey Ross, he did the fuel level check. But rage on cause your right! Fuel level checks are superior, just got done doing mine tonight, should make a noticeable difference.

I'm just throwing this out there and I'm more than likely very wrong, but I've read on another thread that if your slider needles are worn out, you can loose upper to midrange power. Again, I could be wrong, just something to look at while the carbs are off.

If your carbs and valves are synced and adjusted right, maybe your vacuum advance is bad. It's pretty easy to check it with a vacuum gauge. Hook up your vacuum advance to a T, one tube goes to your mouth, the other goes to a vacuum gauge. Suck on the tube, plug with your tongue, and watch the gauge to see if it leaks down. Fred?

                hey newbie and yard dogg,
noticed both of you have the 80 model xs,
i commented on your other thread yd,
sounds like you both have the bitsa model carbs
if your carbs are fitted with 110 main jets id set the carbs
up using the later model specs,
newbie, the bike should be flying after it hits 5000rpm,
usually if it starts breaking down around then and you have
no electrical problems the main jets are to big.

what size jets are you using, are the needles adj on the carbs,
if they are what are they set at, also whats your float heights set at?

The jets are #110, and the needles are non adjustable on my 80. Refer back to post 5 to see yesterdays outcome on adjustment. Carbs will be back on today with any luck.

We are working on the exact same bike! Like how exiting scooby!

I haven't run my bike with the massive main jets I ordered thinking they were 1 size up. My bike also has 110s and it ran great last year except for being a bit lean. I've never had the problem you are describing. I'm leaning more towards a timing issue, or ignition. But just in case it's carb related. Before you put the carbs back on, check your throttle slide diaphram boots for leaks.

Fred: I think psychology might have worked. Before i touched thing off this afternoon, i told it that if it didn't run right this time, i was going to trade it for a Honda. Fired Thing up, and went for a short ride. Runs up to 8500 no problem. Did sputter the first time though. I have not synched it again yet.

Larry: Thanks for the offer, and i might take you up on that. I would have to have my wife pick me up if something happened i couldn't ride it home, but that could be arranged. As i said above, i may have got it. I also cut some off each plug wire to get clean connections to be sure there. It now pulls hard even at 60 MPH. Wouldn't do that earlier.
