Still driving my 68 F100. My grangpa bought it new in 69. Needs some serious work but it still gets me to.from work. My middle son would like to become it's next caretaker. We'll restore it and it will be his, I'm thinking my replacement for it will be a CJ Jeep.

Great trucks Pat! Specially if it has the olo' 352ci motor. They were bout as tough as they come. Greast thing about that motor is it has thick enough cyl. walls you can punch them out to a 390ci first go around and still can punch them out to a 427ci still having enough material for heat absortion and not not being close to a water jacket. The 427 is based off the 352block. 352cubic inch to a 427cubic inch equals a 1/4" of cyl. wall removed......been there, done that. Again, very durable engines inherit by there basic design and function! Good on you passing it along in family!81H Venturer1100 "The Bentley" (on steroids) 97 Yamaha YZ250(age reducer) 92 Honda ST1100 "Twisty"(touring rocket) Age is relative to the number of seconds counted 'airing' out an 85ft. table-top.

I'm driving a hand me down 78 F150 with the 300ci 6. It has just over 90k miles on it now. This truck has always been a second vehicle for old guys and I've put the most miles on it for a given time. It had 68k on it when I got it a little over 3 years ago...
I won't ever sell this truck and the biggest problem is when the time comes, which grandson do I pass it on to...

Actually I don't dislike Fords and I liked the marks,
But they are money pits and like to leave you stranded, sorta like harleys .
While not in the style or comfort of the Lincolns I've had, I had a 70 something Mercury Monterey with 40? engine that was an excellent ride, never broke down and was comphy for a tuna boat.
Who knows, maybe some day I'll try a F (something ).
Stranger things have happened

me too except it was 3 on the tree. Great to be able to sit on the front fender with the hood open to keep the rain off as you worked on the engine. Gotta love changing the air filter; dump out the old oil & pour in the new.
Alas that I traded it on a Ford 1/4-ton that turned out to be a re-badged Mazda that blew head gaskets for a pastime and was trying really hard to turn back into iron oxide.Fred Hill, S'toon

My 97 Powerstroke just pulled my friend's 95 Chevy diesel over Santiam Pass to a garage to be fixed. Didn't bother it at all. When it ran, the Chevy seemed quicker than the Ford, but my friend says the Ford pulls better. He's fixin to add 50 or so hp to the Chevy to give it better legs. Hope it works for him.1980 XS 11 Special: The King of Kong, 9th wonder of the world. Geezer, the 300six wasa good motor. Made good torque so invaredley was used to pull heavy loads which in turn created undue stress on piston skirts. Not uncommon to find achunck of skirt in the pan, and still runnin'. More times than not, that was what the knockin' would be under load rather than a rod bearing....rebuilt a few with either colapsed skirts or a piece gone. They don't like high rpms as this will create the same issue. Other than that, bout as durable as they come considering that majority were over loaded......Poprock, best years for the 7.3L is from 99-03 as that was when the intercooler was added bumping it to an additional 30horse. Having the standard 6speed is good for another rated 25+ponies, which is what my 2000 F-350 super-cab(suicide rear doors)short-bed has. Also straight piped(mine is 5" up through bed)helps as deisels like to be opened up on the exhaust side. K&N helps them on the intake side too. Works for me at 5000ft. elev. Many times in fourth gear if there is any kinda moisture on the road, at 40mph when the turbo spools-up back end will break lose and fish-tale wildly! Reminds me of driving a tractor wit-out the trailer on an 18 wheeler. They can be hard on back tires if your not nice to them empty and doesn't even know what a 7-10% grade is......down-shift......no need empty. The 6.0 was a flop the two years IHC did it, but the 6.4 is way better, and quicker "spool-up" with the varible turbo. Only problem, specially with the autos is the turbo WILL carbon up easily unless you run them out ocassionaly, plus minute fuel being added to exhaust has killed there economy. My 2000 7.3L runs a constant 17.5-18mpg around town and 21mpg highway if run 75mph or under. The pump fuel sucks now, so adding the cetane at fill-ups helps with that, plus a good lubricant for injectors and anti-gel cold temps can cause. Since Ford is doing the new deisel for next year instead of IHC, interesting to see how it pans out having 550horse and 850ft.lbs. of torque. Hope they learned there lesson from the junk Triton gasser! Lots of issues with those engines and saw two of them come back to dealership here with less than 200miles on them and rods punched through the block and were warrentied for the problem! Duramax's still having issues with electronic injectors. Don't care for Dodges drive-train, but the Cumalong is still the most maintenace free ones. Fords trucks would have been there best seller if they used the Cummins, but since they own Cummins was more profitable to sell the Chrysler. Interesting though, if you purchase a F-450 and 550 it comes with the Cummins.....go figure.81H Venturer1100 "The Bentley" (on steroids) 97 Yamaha YZ250(age reducer) 92 Honda ST1100 "Twisty"(touring rocket) Age is relative to the number of seconds counted 'airing' out an 85ft. table-top.

Rant
Sat night I was headed to work. Look in the mirrors and see red and blue lights flashing. I pull over to let the officer by as he must be headed to an emergency call. He stops behind me.
He informs me that my truck is smoking. Thank you for that information, can I help you officer? "Do you know why it's smoking?" I reply "Because it's 40 years old". He asked for my license, registration, and proof of insurance. I provide these documents, he looks at them and returns all but my license. He comes back from his car, with a ticket for smoking. I considered not signing so that he would have to take me in to custody, for a 40 year old truck that smokes.
After signing I said "Saturday night, drunk drivers, drug deals, date rapes, burglaries... best you can do it harass an old guy in an old truck heading to work. Ceres PD's finest are on the job". He got quite upset at this and headed back to his car.
Now I guess I have to rebuild the engine or go to jail?Pat Kelly
