  • Computer Router Problem?

    Hey folks,

Okay, here's the story! I recently installed a new Motorola Surfboard Cable Modem since my old one was 10 years old using DOCSIS 1.1 , new one is much faster with Docsis 2.0!

I have an old Network Everywhere/Linksys router # NR041 connected. I have a wireless access point connected to one of the router's 4 slots. This was to allow use of our several wireless laptops, the Wii. This setup has been working for years.

Even before putting on the new modem..about a week ago I was ONLINE with my laptop on XS11.com...where else! Then all of a sudden, I lost connection with the site. Got the message in my IE7 on WinXP SP3, that the webpage couldn't be displayed. I went upstairs to my desktop, and got the same message on that machine! The Site WAS UP, verified by Wes/JW so it was a problem on my end!

The next day, installed the new modem, got it registered with my ISP, worked just fine, told my ISP's tech support about the problem, told me to DELETE my cookies/Temp Files, did that, and then viola...the site was able to be seen again!? Has been okay for several days, then tonight same problem!

I repeated the steps deleting cookies, files, rebooted laptop, still no joy! Checked my desktop computer, same problem. Called ISP, they don't support or troubleshoot ROUTERS....but worked with me. Unhooked the router, connected desktop directly to MODEM. Rebooted/reset computer and modem, and VIOLA, XS11.com instantly! SO...not MODEM problem. I was able to access many other websites WITH the router connected, just not XS11.com!

Reconnected the router, and same problem again. I'm currently accessing using a PROXY web site while still using the ROUTER.

Not surprisingly, the www.networkeverywhere.com site is OFFLINE...get the 500 server error message....don't know if this a temp problem or if they are no longer in business!? So..I can't find or access a possible Firmware upgrade. Current is Ver 1.2 Release 3. I've never upgraded the Firmware!

I was able to go into the ROUTER setup menus, but can't find any place to check for allowing access to certain websites. It's set for automatically detect DNS, it's in DHCP mode...and as stated other web sites show up just fine....just not XS11.com !?!? I shut down and rebooted the ROUTER to see if that would help with it's I'm assuming DNS problem....no help??

SO...anybody out there got any ideas about this situation, or do you think I need to get a new router?? It's still working fine otherwise!?

    TC,

Look back a few months or so, I had a very similar issue. I could get to all kind sof sites with my Linksys wirelss router (WGR54 I think), but I could NOT get XS11.com, hook my cable modem directly to my desktop and I had XS11.com no problems, just the rest of the family had no internet on the laptops like my daughter trying to do her homework.

I wound up having to go into my router and do the cloning thing (I'm not real versed on the tech jargon and going from memory here). That worked for a while, but it still messed with ym daughters access IIRC. Then even that did not work. And at that time I set it all back to normal and that has been working ever since.

      TC,
You may want to go to the Linksys website directly and see if they still support your router and you can download the firmware/protocol update. If not, you may want to add XS11.com as a trusted site with the corresponding IP address so it can resolve it. Ever since I noticed it, I found it curious that there's no www between the https:// and the xs11 in the fully qualified domain name of ch11. Whether that had any bearing on it or not, I don't know. Could be that you just got all that you were going to get out of that ol' router and you need to get with the times....he, he.
Personally, I never had good luck with the Linksys stuff and much prefer the D-Link gear, much easier to work with and friendlier.
      Good luck bud.

        Hey, TC!

Do you suppose there could be some connection relating to the site's problems of late?

        The timing sure is coincidental...

JW says everything looks ok on his end?

Maybe there's still a protocol bug in the site's server causing the issue?

        Just thinkin' outloud...

That's too weird, could be a router issue, and Cobia's advice seems sound as well... it's just the timing that's too ironic to me I guess...

I've got the same modem and ran into simular problems with the "modem up-grade". I use netgear for routers/switches etc. After playing with my old router which then would work great and then not, my daughter went and got a new netgear router and all is well now.

            Hey T.C.

I had a similar problem with my old linksys router, not being able to connect to some websites and gaming servers. I went out and bought a new one and not had any issues.

Have you tired to default the router? My old linksys has a reset on the back. Have to hold it down for 30 seconds or so for it to reset to default.

            Hope that helps.

              Problem SOLVED....NEW ROUTER!

              Hey Folks,

Thanks for all the suggestions. The old router was a Networkeverywhere brand, made my Linksys for them. Linksys did NOT list it amongst their router Model #'s. The Networkeverywhere website IS actually working. I had found and checked their FTP site, and it was working, found the "latest" firmware for it, I already had that version! I tried the Cloning Mac Address and a few other things to no avail! So...I went to Wallyworld and got a new Belkin "G" combo Wireless/wired 4 port router, had a few little glitches doing the install....but it finally communicated with my modem, and all is right in the world now!!

I guess the old ROUTER was just wearing out, this new one finds XS11.com just fine!!! I guess I got my $ worth for 8 years of service! This new one was only $30.00....I only need "G" service anyways, and I have my wireless access point connected to it, working just fine, don't even need the WIRELESS feature of the router, but it'll be nice as a backup if the access point craps out!
