  • Bikes Fine, Rider not so much

Well, not riding accident related, but it looks like I won't be riding for a while. Working in the yard last weekend I tripped over something in the yard backing up and landed flat on my a$$. Hurt pretty bad but I figured it was mostly my pride that was hurting. Went to work on Monday, and didn't seem too bad, and all, just a little stiff and sore all over from the work (breaking down the jungle in the back yard) but fine with a sore butt.

Tues I had to go down for a eye appt which meant about 40 min of riding each way. I was feeling some pain in my back even before I went down there, and when I got back it was a good bit worse. The next morning I could hardly walk. Went to the Dr, and it's not for sure yet, but it looks like I cracked or broke my tailbone. This likely means I won't be riding for a while, as riding appears to greatly aggravate it. I hope not but it may mean no summer rides this year.

It was pretty stupid of me backing up like I did and tripping, but I guess it is what it is. This might be a good time to do all the cosmetic work I planned as long as it doesn't aggravate the injury. I hope I'll be able to ride this summer but I just don't know yet, it depends on how the healing goes.

Sorry to hear, and I can relate. Done that many years ago in an ice rink. Some smartass 10 year old swept my legs out with a hockey stick and I hit the deck hard. Took a couple of weeks to settle but I could still ride. I found one of those cushions with the hole in the middle, you know the ones used for heamorriod relief, and strapped it to my seat. Looked awful but it worked. Used it for about a month before braving the hard seat again. Long trips werent much fun but short stuff was okay. I actually had more trouble walking than riding.

      Hey Cy,

We all knew you were a Pain in the a$$, and now you've gone and proved it!

Yeap, there's no cast or anything you can do for broken tail bone. Bones take up to a couple months to heal, about 6 weeks, provided you don't aggravate or rebreak it. The hemorrhoid cushion...referred to as a DONUT in the bizz, is a good idea, and is recommended for this type of injury. Fortunately the riding season is just getting started, so you should still be able to get some FUN riding in Starting in July if not late June.

      Hang in there.

Sorry to hear that, That's a real PITA for sure! ATGATT just doesn't seem to fit the occurance here. Take it easy and TRY to avoid irritating that. Done that myself many years ago skiing. Takes some time healing, but never seems to be good as before. Falling is always a reminder.....ouch!

Ouch! Makes me pucker just thinking about it! I slid down the stairs top my basement and bruised my tailbone a copuple years ago, and that thing hurt for weeks! Find a nice comfy pillow to sit on while you polish the bike. You'll be riding again soon enough.

                Bad tailbone accident

I was in the desert some years ago with some friends and one was riding a 350 two stroke dirt bike and he wasn't one of those people who knew his own limitations. He went across the road into a driveway and there was a berm there where the grader had graded the road and when he hit it he was on the thtottle and the bike went high in the air and rotated forward out from under him. He was about 10 feet up and landed on his tailbone in the hard driveway. Cut two chunks out of the driveway with his buns, bounced and hit again the same way leaving two more marks in the driveway, except this time bloody. Left all of the seat of his pants and most of his buns in the first landing. It was a problem getting him to the hospital as there was only one car there and it was a small one. He rode to the hospital in the back seat in a fetal position. Broke his tailbone in several places and left him with NO BUNS. Took several weeks for him to get on his feet even.

cy - hope your back to riding again soon. Tailbone injuries suck, SWMBO broke her's in a fall down some steps, according to the Dr's its healed now but it still causes her some pain now and then if she sits in the wrong position to long.

As for leaving buns in a drive way - OUCH!!! One of those stories that makes me wince when I read it.

                    Appropriate ATGATT

                    Hi Cy,
yeah, you don't think ATGATT when you are doing yard work.
But what gear would be appropriate for attacking the wilderness with a gas-engined heavy-duty brushcutter?
Hard hat, eye protection, work gloves, steel-toed boots and a pair of oversized hockey shorts with a cushion shoved down the back?
                    Get well soon, eh?

                      Thud vs Bounce.

                      Awwh Cy!

                      Happened so quick didn't it?

I had a short fall (< 2 1/2 feet) onto the asphalt while roller-blading last year around this time. Had all the gear on (Totally Dweebed-Out but no fashion risk as the lady I was with wore the same...) but fell onto my hipbone.

Manned up and continued for the rest of the day. The day after I had the same response as you. (No X-rays though..)

Heal time was over 6 months before I could move without twinges or sleep at night without waking up in the wrong and oh-so-wrong position.

Didn't impact my riding much though cause I don't do the iron-butt thing anyways. By the end of a couple tanks I'm exhausted by the sheer excitement of it all. Way before my hip/rear would give-out.

'Nuther reason to have an attitude against the younger riders: they must be made of rubber the way they bounce back.

Well, the good news is that it's not broken, just bruised (much like my pride at this point). Not that it doesn't hurt anyways. I think I'm going to do the donut thing anyways to relieve the pressure. That could mean riding to work tomorrow!

Sorry, can't make myself drink something that looks, tastes like (IMNSHO) and is yeast pi$$. I prefer my water relatively fresh, and not pre-processed. I do however rather like Mt Dew and Monster Energy drinks.
