  • air tool issue

I borrowed an air hammer and chisel set from my boss to try and remove a stripped bolt on my Jeep(head is actually stripped). When i connect the air line to the tool the chisel moves in and out. When i squeeze the trigger nothing happens. How are these things supposed to work?My boss said it sat for 20 years, i added oil but it blows out the barrel.Could the inner workings be the issue?I adjusted the knob on the bottom but nothing works. When the tool is not attached to the air line, i can feel something moving back and forth.

If it sat for 20 years, it's probably FUBAR'ed. The easy thing would be to pull it apart, and clean the insides and reassemble. There are NOT that many parts to it, and if you pay attention, it's easy to fix.
    Good luck, though!

Its my boss at work tool and he has not used it either so i don't want to take it apart.I found a brand new one on E-Bay but not sure how an air hammer works-i guess pull the trigger and it moves back and forth.

That is basically it. It probably will NOT work to take a bolt head off, though. I would use a dremmel with a cut off blade.

I don't want to remove the bolt head-I cant get the Torx bolt tool in the bolt because the head is stripped and it is in a bad location.I thought i can hit it with the air chisel to put a gouge in the metal and then get a pipe wrench on it.Have heard from people that if i hit it right might cause the stuck bolt to move. Then i could grab it with the pipe wrench or vise grips.

Are you talking about a rounded off head of the bolt?
Air chisel is a little bit over kill, something you might see on a "tim the tool man" show

If your set on trying to turn the bolt that way you can use a steel chisel and a regular hammer.

If all the other bolts come out ok, and there be enough room, remove all the other bolts and then cut off the head other stuck bolt, slide head off.

            BTW,
Old air tool sounds like it has a bad o-ring or two.

              Air tool

Try holding the tool with the chisel down then hold the trigger back an the bounce the chisel on the floor or a piece of steel. Some times it will jar the hammer in the tool loose.
              Thanks Tom

                Mmo...

...which is Marvel Mystery Oil is best to store and keep air tools in good shape. To free up a seized tool try PB Blaster and like COOL TOM suggested work it a little. May have to disassemble if those don't work. Another thought(insert light bulb) weld a nut on the stripped head. HTH

                  Hi Oldyam,
I bought an el-cheapo air chisel a while back. It only goes Brrrrrrrrrp if the chisel is held against something so that the chisel bounces back.

Yup same as fredintoon says...You have to hold it against something in order for it to cycle properly. At least the ones we use to chip concrete out of our drums work that way. We use them a lot on our mixer trucks and they will just sit there looking like they do not work unless you put pressure on it.

Well i called my boss and he says to me-your the mechanic fix it.So i put the air line on and noticed air leaking past the fitting so i took it off, wrapped Teflon tape on it-still had air escaping so i took the fitting off a pneumatic grease gun i had and wrapped it with Teflon tape and installed it on the hammer-presto!Got it working! Now i just have to sharpen the chisel.
