Just thought I'd share if anyones interested. Today I got to know what 30,000HP at the tip of my finger tips feels like. I was running the 900lb steam plant as the ship maneuvered to the dock in Puerto Rico. We have a camera pointing at the stack to see the exhaust gases from the boiler. I could see through the camera that we were right alongside the pier when I got the full astern order. That was interesting. Before we got to the dock I had to resist the temptation to crank it up like how I ride my motorcycle. It would get me fired but it would sure be fun. You can't wind it up too much because you might snap that 3ft diameter steel shaft. Thought you fellow motorheads might appreciate that.

Awesome man, got any pics of this row boat you speak of? You should take a sharpie and mark in right above full power on the throttle, XSessive.
I worked for a company that makes large industrial compressors for petrol industry and our largest compressor was 40,000 HP and had a ~30' long crank. ...cant remember dia.Last edited by WMarshy; 04-02-2010, 10:47 PM.'79 XS11 F

The burning Question I have is:
How much torque does 30,000hp at 120 rpm translate to??? Probably enough if converted to a catapalt, it would throw my bike from St. Louis to OK and land in Tod's lap, or pointing the other direction, right in Fred's side car, car. Well just a thought anyway. A flight of fancy one might say, or a flight of fantacy maybe? I am starting to mumble to myself so I had better sign off and get another cup of coffee.

The big white thing is the low pressure turbine. The High pressure turbine is much smaller and sits adjacent to it. There is a pic of the turbine generator also. I had some really cool pics of the boilers as well but I couldn't upload them. Its hard to appreciate the size of the boilers because the engine room is built around them. HA! Thats just a baby turbine. I work in a Nuclear power plan that has a 1200 MW generator. Now that is a sight to see! I wish I could post pictures but that would get me in big trouble. Thanks for sharing man.
To give you an idea, the bolts that hold together the two halfs of our turbine cases are ~2-2.5" diameter bolts!Last edited by WMarshy; 04-09-2010, 03:03 PM.'79 XS11 F

Yeah, she's a real old baby but she's reliable. As long as you treat her nice, she doesn't act up. Its my responsibility to put steam on and get her warmed up for maneuvering. Sometimes I run the throttles at sea as well.United States Merchant Marine Academy, Kings Point, NY
