I keep seeing all of these tours and rallies in the NW and SW states but what about the MID West?

I live in SE Idaho and would love to try to put together something like a bike tour of Yellowstone or something of that nature. I've auto toured and snowmobile toured Yellowstone but I've never done it on a bike. I love Yellowstone. The main loop thru the park is about 140 miles and it can be broken down into 2 smaller loops. There are MANY neat things to see and the sights allow many chances to stop and stretch your legs while taking in the sights such as Old Faithful, Mammoth Falls and other geysers and geothermal areas.

Even a get together in Jackson Hole or Sun Valley would be cool. I think Jackson Hole would be better since Sun Valley tends to be a bit snobbish. I've even thought of a bike tour of the Salt Lake City, Utah area with a visit to the famed Bonneville Salt Flats where we could get a chance to REALLY open up our bikes and run flat out in relative safety. I personally would LOVE to run a bike there and go flat out straightline for miles and not have to worry about speed limits, other vehicles and any other obstacle.

If there is anyone interested in trying to put together a rally or run in this area.... please contact me and lets see what happens.

I need to call the BLM Salt Lake office to check into usage restrictions. I know that for major racing or filming.... they require a permit. But.... for short term usage such as sight seeing and hiking.... there are no restrictions that I know of. Guess I will just need to call and find out for sure.

Then again... maybe I'll just take a ride to SLC and check things out in person. I'm only 2 hours away from the salt flats.

Oh..... and the Bonneville Speed Week runs August 16-22. The pit areas are open to the public but the actual run is 1/4 mile away.

The World Finals are to be held sometime in October.

Racing begins at noon on Saturday the 17th and runs until they close the staging area at 5pm. The pit area stays open until dusk. On Monday the 18th until the racing is completed.... the runs begin at 7am.

If anyone is NOT familiar with the Bonneville Speed Week.... it is the annual challenge in many classes to set new land speed records. The "long" run is approximately a 5 mile straight stretch. The event is held on the Bonneville Salt Flats about 90 miles west of Salt Lake City near Wendover. Wendover in itself is interesting since it sits on the Utah/Nevada border and the Nevada half of Wendover has casino gambling.

I really don't think we could set any records unless we could change gears in the final drive.

I was thinking about attending simply as a spectator. Admission to Speed Week is free...... including the pit area.

IF you want to actually race..... your best bet is the World of Speed competition that is held on the flats from Sept 16-22. It is sponsored by the Utah Salt Flats Racing Association. Admission to this event as a spectator is $8 per day or $20 for a full event pass.

To race at this event.... you must first be a USFRA member which entails filling out a form and sending in a $35 membership fee. For this fee you get a 4 day pass to the event, jacket patch, and association newsletters.

IF you want to run a street legal vehicle during the event you need to apply to the 130 MPH Club which costs $90 to attempt plus the above membership fee. To qualify.... you must complete at least 2 one mile runs with an average speed of at least 130MPH (not to exceed 140MPH). A vehicle capable of 130 MPH is not required to do the race. It is something the USFRA set up to allow any "joe off the street" to get the thrill of running on the flats wide open. But..... to actually become a member of the club.... you have to have the 130MPH average.

To run a motorcycle at World of Speed.... for the 130MPH Club...

All drivers must be members of USFRA, be a licensed driver, and sign a loss damage waiver to participate

The 130-mph format is specifically designed for street cars/ motorcycles. To gain entrance into the 130-mph club, the vehicle must run the measured mile twice in the same day at a speed no less than 130 mph. The two runs are then averaged. Once a driver & car combination has achieved 130 club status no more runs will be allowed

An initial "licensing" pass at no more than 100 mph will be required to calibrate on board speed gauge equipment. i.e.; tachometer, speedometer, etc.
Maximum speed will be 140 mph - any vehicle exceeding 140 mph will be disqualified from making anymore passes and will not receive a timing slip.
The driver must wear a Snell 95 approved, full-face helmet, long sleeve shirt or jacket, and long pants.
Motorcycle riders must have full leathers, which zip together, including boots and gloves.

Vehicles must have H, V, or Z rated tires which are rated for speeds in excess of 130 mph.
Tires & wheels for all vehicles will have metal valve caps (metal valve stems highly recommended) & crack-free valve stems. No tires wider than 10" will be allowed, unless the tires are OEM to the vehicle. (Narrow tires work better on the Salt).

Just remember that you must exceed 130mph in less than ONE mile. My old XS can get there.... but I'm not sure I can do it in only one mile.

                    midwest rally

Even though I am new to the site I was also wondering why I didn't see any rallies here (Midwest)I have only been to Yellowstone once.(car)
It sounds as if you are familiar with it ,I went in late May and it was still snowing,
My campsite was under water so I stayed in lodge,#275.00 per night,
You probably have a better idea when a better time might be.
                    Salt lake sounds good also,
I just have to figure out a way to haul my dirt bike behind my 11.
