    Hello,

Just picked up a 1980 XS1100 that needs some attention, but should be road worthy without too much of a fight. Most of my wrench'n has been on old KZ's so in a little different territory here, I'm fond of any older bike though. Thanks in advance for any advice you guys have.

Welcome to the forum, Bell, you have a Midnight Special? We like pictures!

Have you read the FAQ yet? What to look for on a neglected XS1100

There're lots of Tech Tips under the 'XS11 INFO' menu button at the top of the page, too!

    Regards,

    Scott

Welcome to the forum Bell, and congrats on your recent acquisition!

There's a 'How to' thread here that member Catatonicbug posted not long ago for the picture posting tips.

You'll find this site to be a great source of info & help. Lots of knowledgable and great folks here, and we all are into the preservation of these great bikes.

Look forward to seeing a few pics of your Midnight, and getting acquainted.

Thanks for the welcome and tips on pics etc...I will be checking out neglected thread next. It's a Midnight Special but alot of the Midight has worn off. Not sure it's supposed to be red either. Serial # says it should be New Yamaha Black, so unless "new" means red it's been painted.

No luck on the pics, Bell.
Are you going through a 3rd party host site like Photobucket first?

That's what most use around here... (and you'll find most of us like it because it's free.... we're a cheap bunch... that's also why we ride 30 year old Jap bikes, too... LOL)

Didn't realize Photobucket adds the code for you so I had too much code in the line from pressing img button. Should have asked my kid first.

                    Bell,

Check your VIN located on the RH side of the fork mast and compare to this chart:

                    Serial Number & Model Identification
                    US Models:

If it's a true Midnight, It should be either an LG or an LH, depending on year... if American. 4H3 or 4W1 in the serial #. HTH's ya.

Falls under this...1980 XS1100LG 4H3-000101 New Yamaha Black.

Got luckey and found a manual at the library so I'm going to go grab it. Dying to know if all those lines are req, from the tank going to that small control valve then to the carbs. I would like to stream line things if possible.

                      Thanks again men.

Looks like you do indeed have an '80 Midnight!

Looking at the pics, though... it looks like it may have had an engine & middle drive swap at some point... not sure... I'll let some of the more knowledgable Midnight owners chime in.... Cbug's got one... he can tell ya a lot more than I can about the Midnights.

The wheels & rotors look right, exhaust, and some of the covers... but either the tank and the side covers have been repainted or swapped from another bike? Should've been all black, w/ gold accents.

Lots of great potential there, though! Congrats, again.

                            Welcome to the forum.
Thatll be a fun bike to do up,
do the engine and frame numbers match up?
the engine as well as the tank and side covers on the midnite were black and didnt have the kick starter.
The exhaust looks original and are hard to come buy.

Engine # is 2H7-021145 so it must be out of a '79.
                              Frame # is 4H3-003146 1980.

Are there any differences in the engine that is in there and the engine it came with that I should know about?
