  • what do do about my seat

so I have a recovered 78 seat and also a corbin touring double bucket off an 80, I really want a great seat for the long runs but I dont like the look of the corbin and the cover is held together with duct tape, my 78 seat looks nice but if I go over 100 miles I feel like my butt is going to fall off , can you guys post pics of your seat (bike) and let me know what the comfort level is , I am thinking of shaving down the corbin and recovering it justlooking for some ideas , this for a standard 78

Along the same lines, the PO just wrapped the seat in some cheap vinyl (and I do mean cheap) which is already starting to crack (and likely split soon). Short of finding an 80 standard replacement seat cover (which I have had NO luck even finding so far, lots of 79 and earlier and special covers but no 80 standard covers), what is the most economical way to handle this?

I don't have much to spend on it, as SWMBO is not happy with what I spent this month already, so it needs to be as cheap as I can do but it's gotta work reasonably well. I'll admit that what he put on there didn't look too bad until it started to crack/split, but I'd kinda like it to last a little longer than a year.

Hope this is not considered a hijack since it's along the lines of the same question?

PS: I still want to know who moved the smilies around. Still trying to get used to where they are now, keep clicking the wrong ones out of habit.

I think the seat is really comfortable, but there are a few disclaimers to that opinion:
              • This is what I have to compare it to:
              • I have yet to ride for more than 20/25 minutes
              • I have yet to ride for more than 10 minutes without a stop light/sign
              • Remember that seat on that other tiny bike up a few lines? I have sat on that for over an hour straight before , so anything that is better than that is bound to make me happier. (Whenever I did that, my but was imprinted in the seat for more than two hours afterward.)
              • no opinion on the passenger seat yet. Waiting to take that MSF course in a week before I think about putting anyone there.
              • I have no idea where/what the seat came from/is, but I might be taking my seat off over spring break and will look for identifying info (anyone in the area want to help with any little fix ups on a new motorcycle owner's bike????)

I'll take a quick look tomorrow in the light. If the info is all the way under, it'll be next week as I got too much homework (I know, I know, if I have that much I shouldn't even be here, but my brain just can't do it all straight )

I bought a cop bike seat that I plan to install on my bike. I figure if the cops can sit on them all day long, they can't be all bad...

I bought a seat just like Drake's last summer for my 79 Special. The
guy I bought it from said it came off a Special. It did bolt up on my bike
but I could tell it wasn't made for it so I bought a different seat. At least
now I know it fits a 78 Standard. It is very comfortable but didn't look right on
the Special. If anyone is interested in it shoot me a pm me and I'll take some pics.

I had a double bucket on my bike when I got it (the OLD daily ride). I had a person recover it, after moving the bucket back about 1.5". I put a bicycle gel pad under the cover, and was able to ride 7,200 miles in 13 days with no seat problems. I DID have the foam cut down a little, and reshaped.
Cy, YOU CAN get a "replacement" cover for your '80. 3-phase sent his seat to Hurst, TX and had them make a cover for it. They now have a pattern for the '80 standard.

For what it's worth, when my '78 was new it had the BEST seat I've ever sat on. Any distance, no problem. But about five years in, it started going bad and the only thing I can figure is the foam aged, and not for the better. It's pretty much as you now describe yours.

So maybe the answer is to replace the foam? I know that on the 'premium' seats, high quality foam is one of the reasons for the cost and it seems that I've heard mentioned somewhere that you want 'medical grade' for the best life.
