I'm not so sure about that. If it had been that hot, don't you think it would have melted/warped/popped the tires as well? They are perfectly fine and still holding air. I could be completely wrong on this, but that's just what I think.

          Varnae,

Has the cause of the fire been determined?

Do you have anyone in the neighborhood with a hard-on about motorcycles?

The cause of the fire was me. I had rebuilt the carbs and had just put them back on the bike that morning. I checked for leaks, but apparently didn't do a good enough job of it because as soon as I hit the starter, it ignited. We didn't own a fire extinguisher and I wasn't thinking quick enough to go grab some baking soda. Instead, I, like an idiot, grabbed the hose. Bad call on my part because it just went from there.

I will not be working on anything again at my home that even remotely has the chance of causing a fire, and my next home will have so many fire extinguishers in it, you won't be able to turn around without seeing one somewhere. I will not put my family in that kind of jeopardy again.

I had that happen with a Coleman Stove before I tried putting the fire out with water, just spread the fire.

At least you were alert enough to get the family out.

                  Varnae,

That is a tough one to even think about. I don't think there is anyone here who hasn't got a stack of things they have done and missed the "Big One" by inches.

I know if those "Big Ones" were nickels, I would be a rich man.

Sometime we get away, sometime we get bit. I've got a bunch of bite marks myself.

If there is anything you need, don't hesitate to give a holler.

I'm not too proud to beg... if anyone has any parts will fit a 79 standard that they just wanna get rid of, I will happily take them off your hands.

Carl, There was a guy lived close to me that was selling his old 79 Standard full bagger. Had put the harley style fender on the front but still had the stock one sitting on a shelf in the garage.

It was a bit rusty on the chrome parts, some of it I am sure is pitted. But it may clean up pretty nicely. It will need everything gone through as it was last plated in 2001 IIRC, so that was the last time it ran. The engine seemed siezed up, but I may not have gotten it out of gear as all the brakes are also locked up so no way to tell for sure.

If your interested, let me know.

It all depends on what he's asking for it Don. Right now I don't have any money to spend. SWMBO says I can't buy any bike stuff until we at least have a house to live in (which I readily agreed to). At this point, I'm just running the flag up the pole to see what happens. Definitely find out what he's asking for it though, if you would please.

I have not talked to him in months, I'd say about $500-700 is what is worth. We never really talked price though. It has the sampsonite removable bags. So you can take the bags in the house, pack up, put them on the bike, ride where your going, then take them into the hotel with you.

When you think your in the market let me know and we can approach him then.

So sorry to hear about the fire. I may be able to help you out with some parts. I'm going to be relocating shortly and the plan is to go through my parts. I'll send you a list next week and you can pick out what you want.

We had our new home burn down in '78. I know what a heart ache you're going through. Best of luck to you and your family.
