Hello all i have a question that pertains to another board that i will ask on this board.I have an exhaust slip-on for another bike that i own that i tried numerous times to sell. The issue-nobody wants to give me what i paid for it($340.00)It is stainless steel and not a lot of people have them because they want to spend their money on a full exhaust system.A guy recently asked if i would sell it.I said i would but cannot take a loss.He offered $150.00 for it-i told him it is worth a lot more.I told him again that i cant take a loss and he tells me he could give me more.He then said that i agreed on $150.00.I also said shipping would be $16.00 because of weight and size of box.Now he wants me to split shipping costs with him.If i am trying to sell something why should i pay half the shipping? Its not a necessity that is sell this thing that cheap either.

You don't have to do anything. And when I sell anything online. The buyer pays shipping....all of it.Likewise I pay for shipping when purchasing.
If the exhaust is worth more, just keep it till you find a guy willing to pay what you want.
On the flip side, things are worth what someone will pay.

If you did not sell it on e-bay or some other official auction type web site then no binding agreement has been made. You are not required to sell it to the other person or for that matter anyone. If the concern is getting a bad rap on the other board, then your going to want to have saved your e-mails.
On a different note, The rule of thumb on buying used stuff is:
Except in exceptional cases any item that is no longer in a retail store is only worth 50% of its retail value.

True but also-parts that are no longer made are harder to come by.This exhaust is stainless steel and i told the buyer it is worth more than he wants to pay for it.Even though i don't want a bad rap for backing out-I'm sure he would sell it for a lot more than he wants to pay me for it.

I agree that you have no need to sell anything to anyone because they want you to. From what you say, you never agreed to what he thinks you did. As sad as it is, some people will lie to get what they want. It is a rare thing if not a non-issue here at XS11 thank goodness, but it happens ALOT.

As to the price, if your looking for validation that you can get your asking price. Well, if I can still go to the mfg, or retail and buy it at that price you paid, then why would I take a chance on buying a "used" part? You are obviously not offering a warranty on the part, you may or may not be there if something goes wrong for the buyer. There is a certain reduction in price expected when you buy a part from a private party that they no longer want. But then again, as has been stated, it is worth what someone else is willing to pay you for it. And it is your right to hang onto it until that price is in line with the minimum your willing to part with it for.

The fact that he wants me to split shipping costs really aggravates me.The part is no longer manufactured as i personally know the owner of the company and spoke numerous times to him.He said when i bought the part-changes were made and that was the last of them as he took it off his shelf. He still sells other parts but not this one.The upgraded version is around $342.00.I know someone wont pay me close to that but 150.00 + shipping?

              Hi oldyam,
if you sold it for $150 you'd be out $190 for sure.
If you keep it you have a garage ornament you paid $340 for and the potential to sell it at a better price.
              But that's up to you.

SOrry, I agree completely with you on the shipping issue.

I have bought a number of parts over the last several months to put "Humpty Dumpty" back together again. (The project bike). I have yet to find anyone who paid for the shipping.

In fact, the one part I bought that turned out to be the wrong part, I got a full refund for the purchase and their shipping, but I am still out my cost to ship it back to them.

If the sell price works for you, tell him he pays all shipping or no deal. Better yet, tell him you have a limited time only offer for him personally, you promise not to offer it to anyone else. If he just pays an extra $50 for the part, you will be happy to split the shipping .

Well the buyer said he would contact the owner to see if they made these and was told they are not produced anymore-the style i have.So he asks what i wanted and told him and he agreed to give me what i wanted + pay for all shipping.I wont ship until i get his money order and if it isn't the correct amount will send it right back to him.

Well i shipped the package after the money order came.I had quoted the guy $16.00 to ship-i took the box to the PO and they said $13.00 + insurance + delivery confirmation. He was good with that and asked for a tracking #.The Post Office only gives tracking #'s with express and priority packages.I sent the box out parcel post-anything else would have cost $40.00 and up.He was angry that it didn't go out express mail. Finally i told him shipping this out has turned out to be a nightmare and don't expect things in life free.
