  • Lesson learned, check the weather....

OK, now that you've seen the photos...

I just moved and now live about an hour south of reno, monday I took some time off work to visit the DMV to transfer titles, get plates, drivers license etc. Anyways part of the process required is a VIN inspection, so I think well its a little cold here (at home) but not bad, I'll gear up and just follow SWMBO to the DMV because I have no way to transport the bike without riding it. Well as the pictures show it was dry and cool at my house but an hour north in Reno it was snowing hard, they got about 6 inches of white and it was a wild ride. Never did I imagine that the weather would be that different in such a short distance, but now I know.

Looks like that windshield was a challenge to see through! Glad you made it ok. Do you really have to drive an hour to get to a DMV?!

Lucky the windshield is cut low enough for me to easily look over it. No I don't have to drive an hour, there is one about 30 minutes away but we had to go to Reno to drop the inlaws off at the airport so we figured "as long as we are there"

I'll have to try and see you next time I get up to Reno to see my youngest sister. As she now lives in "North" Reno, it's probably 45 minutes from Minden.

Yeah stop on by, my garage is always open to fellow xs'ers passing through the area. With a little notice I'd even have time to pick up refreshments....

Ah, man, that brings back memories of living in Oakhurst up the Sierras.

I used to use a special gauge in the winter to tell me when to quit riding: when the bike high-centered in the snow and ceased to move forward under its own power I gauged it was time to bring the bike inside and tear it down for its yearly inspection and maintenance!

So do they make snow tires for an XS?

The Mefo Explorer dual sport tires used in Alaska have good reviews at twistedthrottle.com. I don't know if the rear tire would actually fit; might have to get a smaller tire:-

                  Front 100/90-19 $125.00

                  Rear 130-80-17 $149.99

At least there's no snow on the road unless that was later in the trip. Reminds me of many years ago when I was riding my XS500. I took it to work in early April. Over the work day we received 5 inches of snow and I had to ride the bike home. WOW, it was an UGLY trip that took 2 hours in heavy snow storm traffic. I really don't know how I managed to not go down. I guess I was actually lucky that traffic was so heavy and slow moving.

Riding in snow isn't fun for anyone unless you're a crazy European doing the Elefantentreffen.

The news report is in German but words really aren't necessary!

I used to ride my XS400 in the snow in Tacoma Wa as long as it wasn't deeper than about 4 inches. Of course it didn't tend to stay icy on the roads, so any snow that was there was not packed (it quickly went to slush on the roads), but I'm not sure I'd try that now, that was almost 30 years ago, I'm a little smarter now (at least I'd like to think so) and frankly I don't think I handle pain as well as I did then (or cold either.)

HAHAHAHA I agree. I live in minnesota, I have (not joking) a 6ft pile of snow in my front yard. However my bike has been sitting in my garage all winter torn apart due to engine issues. As soon as the engine runs and the tire turns I plan to be going for a nice shake down run. 30ish degrees, a couple pair of pants, leather jacket and gloves, and a full face brain bucket I should be good for about 30 mins or so. Oh and a scarf, I learned last fall the neck gets really cold when its under 50 degrees out.

Best wishes to ya, I'm glad you made it threw the ride to tell the tail.
