  • Engine Break-in Thread, where did you go?

Hi guys and gals, I havent been around in a while, snowmobiles will do that to a fella I guess... Anyways, I know somewhere I read a thread about breaking in engines. Within that thread was an online article which talked about doin WOT pulls like on a dyno to break in an engine. I searched about 15 pages of threads and couldnt find it. Can anyone help me? Thanks.

Oh, BTW here is a pic of my sled I picked up earlier this season. Its a 1998 Polaris XCR 440 and has been extended to a 136" track.

    Hope everyone is doing well.

I'm not sure how far back I would need to go to find the thread, but here is what I learned many years ago at Arizona Automotive Institute.
When you have the engine built and adjusted, take the car/bike/whatever out and in a MIDDLE gear (third for an XS1100) rub the engine up to 2/3 or 3/4 of redline, and chop the throttle until back down to about 1500 RPM. Do this about three or four times, until you no longer see blue smoke as you chop the throttle. This will seat the old style rings quickly, and then you drive.ride easily for the next 500 miles. DO NOT use a cruise control, or hold a steady speed during break in.
Some of the newer engines don't need this done, as the rings and walls are made to seat quickly on their own. When all else fails, FOLLOW THE DIRECTIONS OF THE MFG OF THE PARTS!

Thanks for the advice but im interested in that thread because it had a good aricle in it on the controversial way of doing a break-in, hard WOT pulls... The problem is the search brings up every damn topic that has the word "break" in it.

Should the methor be any different for two strokes? I wouldnt think so...any thought?

        http://www.mototuneusa.com/break_in_secrets.htm

It says it only applies to 4-strokes... I wounder how come not 2-strokes too?

Hey there WMarshy......with many years of two-stroke racing and puttin' in top ends on them, here is how we did an initial break-in. This would also apply to the later water cooled nicastle lined cyl. scoots and sleds alike.. Start and run at an idle till head is too hot to touch. Let cool al the way down, repeat, then ride it like you stole it. Seriously, has been a rule of thumb on two-strokes for as long as I can remember!

How long untill you consider a 2-stroke broke-in, 1 tank, 2 tanks of gas?

              cool! another sledder

Glad to see another one on here! Sled looks good. Do you like the long (ger) track? Been riding much?
My last two sleds have been broke in with one tank of 50:1 in tank, plus oiler, and pretty much ridden like normal, just holding back a bit. I pretty much just tried to avoid any wide open hill climbs of more than about 5 seconds. They look beautiful inside (cylinder walls, etc.) I have read about the heat and cool method mentioned above but have never tried it on my sleds. I just mix them rich, and ride them within reason through that first full tank. They seem to like it. But after the second tank, all bets are off!

BTW, up here a 136 is a short track!

              Here is my new 1000 "short track 153" (M7 was a 162) 2.25 paddle:

Healthy is merely the slowest rate at which you can die

Some people will tell you that slow is good - and it may be, on some days - but I am here to tell you that fast is better. I’ve always believed this, in spite of the trouble it’s caused me. Being shot out of a cannon will always be better than being squeezed out of a tube. T71Ford, that is one nice sled you have! And the snow, OMG no wonder you need a 153"! We (most all of upstate NY) dont ever see snow amounts like your showing! Almost all of my riding is on groomed trails, and they get rough! The 136" helps some but this last weekend I rode about 170 mi and got beat up some. Im going to be looking at getting some walker evan clickers to slip in so I can continue to ride the way I like, fast. This sled is new to me so Im going to trying to get the current suspension dialed in before I go upgrading shocks. Spring isnt too far away and I need to start thinking about the XS and what she needs (petcocks, battery, front tire)!

P.S. My sled just has the SLP rail/tunnel extension with a 1" lug track, 2" risers, 04 Pro-X full composit skis, and some mild port/polish action. Next year I want to get a 1.25" lug track, 3" pivot risers, and walker evan shocks so she can mash some mongols.
