  • Metal Question

    Hi Folks,

Can anybody tell me what kind of metal CB 750 gas tanks are made of?
It's pretty flexable. Are all late 70's early 80's tanks generally made of the same material? And what gauge?
I'm trying to modify an 81 CB 750 gas tank, and I'm pretty new to this kind of stuff. And I gotta say, I'm really enjoying this!

    Thank you
    Joe

    Hi Joe,
most gas tanks are steel, see if a magnet sticks to it.
It's most likely a deep drawing steel. That is, it's the mildest of mild steels that may have a secret recipe for it's alloy so it forms real easy in the deep pressing dies that are needed to turn flat sheet into a gas tank.
That stuff is real easy to weld because of it's composition. It's also real difficult to weld because it's so effin' thin.
Get a FUBARed tank to practice on before cutting into a tank that you are fond of.

      Thanks Fred,
      It's steel alright.
I cut out the bottom, and a mountain of rust poured out.
I think I can fix that, though.
This metal working is a lot of fun, but it's hell on the hands.
