So depressing. My brain doesn't process the 3D stuff, and that first picture... man I'd like that in 3d.

I've got family who's kind of exited about the 3D TV stuff and whatnot. Doesn't help me. I've never gotten 3D stuff to work, even as a kid. I still see the weird color halos and all that crap. Glasses, no glasses, focused, unfocused, close or far away, all it does is give me a migraine.

I have a astigmatism, I think that's preventing me from getting a clean focus on the '3rd' pictures

        Poll is still open!

Below is another image: Tall, cool, inviting, and good for testing your ability to see in 3D or to quench your thirst for more 3D practice.

        Instructions:

For those of you who don't know what these are, they are called stereograms, 3D pictures depending how you look at them. They sort of work like Magic Eye but they're a little different than those. Here's how to see them in 3D:

Cross your eyes while keeping your sight level with the computer screen. Seeing as there are two pictures below side by side that look the same, ;the objective is for your left eye to be looking at the right picture, while your right eye is looking at the left picture. Your eyes may not be used to doing this, so what it will look like is three blurry pictures at first instead of two clear ones. Since these pictures are 3D, you will have to change your focus to something hypothetically closer. This will put the 3D picture in focus then everything else will get blurry.

        ................................

If you can see the image above in 3D then please vote Yes in the poll.
If you cannot see the image above in 3D then please vote No in the poll.

        Spider,

Did you ever play with one of those GAF Viewmasters as a kid?

        Silent,

I have astigmatism too. That being said I have no clue what that means....

I can get the third image for a split second then I lose it again. I found if I got closer to the pics it was easier. Dunno if I will keep trying or not. My mother said I would stay cross eyed for doing that when I was young, and I sure dont want to see doubles of SWMBO all the time.

I can get the Hooters girl real easy, I got the beer can but it took longer to focus, and I can't get any of the fuse holder pictures to focus. I think that the closer the camera is to the item the harder it is for me.

I will say that it is cool.

if you can get a hooters girl real easy, you need to stop messing around online and go get some wings! then post those pictures for the "3D" image for us to see if we can get it!

                Transitions

The "cross-eyed" 3D pics are the easiest way to see the effect without special glasses or equipment. That doesn't mean it's perfect. Some difficulties remain.

First problem is that exactly how much you have to cross your eyes varies from person to person. That depends on the size of your viewing screen, how far away from it your eyes are, and the amount of separation between the pictures. I'd say that a good thing to try is to move closer or farther away from the screen if you're having difficulty getting the pics to fuse together. Once you get it right then the images will blend together.

Second problem is shifting gears between the ordinary viewing and the 3D cross-eyed style. I can do it but then I'm not happy when I have to shift back and forth a lot. Much easier to "lock-in" the 3D, stay that way, and just scroll down the screen:

                .........................................

                ...........................

The above pic is the bird's eye view of one of the roads from last year's trip. My eyes had to cross a little farther than they did in Liz's photo but since I was already locked-in to 3D it wasn't such a big transition.

                HTH.

Let me rephrase it, I can see the Hooters girls easy. The wife would veto letting me get a Hooters girl unless I put a Hooters top on her. If I was single, I could have a chance of getting a real Hooters girl*.

*Maybe one out of a million chance, but it's still a chance.

BTW, I can see the second girl easy. I can get the mountains to focus but a blurry black line on the edge gets in the way. The tip about staying crosseyed and scrolling helps.

Hey Silent, Well, yes, if your astigmatism is bad enough that you can't get a good clear focus, then it could inhibit your ability to see the 3d image clearly, but if you have glasses that correct for the astigmatism, then you should be able to see the 3d affect....IF you can actually see 3d!?

Hey Spider, well, it sounds/looks like you may be one of the folks that possibly had some mismatching of your left and right eyes and their focusing as a child, and so your brain just couldn't deal with the "confusion" of the two differently focused images, and never learned how to FUSE them into one 3D image. So...yes, 3D for you is NO treat, but if you have otherwise clear vision, then you can still enjoy HD vision and TV.

Hey Latex, not to make a joke, but that's an optical illusion. You're comparing the size of the 3D image with the size of the two 2D images that are side by side. When you look at just one of the 2D images, you'll actually see that it's the same size as the 3D image that you can see!

                    Hey Tod,

The foreground DOES change a bit, because it's viewed/taken from a slightly different angle. If you look at the CAN photo, you'll see more of the blue lable to the left of the letter "B" is visible in the right photo. This is how our eyes see when they are seeing in 3D, and so it's a simple technique of taking 2 photos just a few inches apart which simulates the different angles of view that our own eyes see! Then, there's some nice fancy software that aligns the images properly so that they are perfectly side by side and such to make the fusing process as easy as possible for our eyes.

I do think that this technique would be helpful in certain situations, but not necessarily in all of them. So...Larry, the stereogram pairs would be sufficient for a tech article, they would provide the 2D view and for those that CAN see 3D, that view as well, so extra linking or such to the "other" format wouldn't be necessary...IMHO!

This could add a whole new "DIMENSION" to ride reports and such!
