Round 2: 04 Hyundai Elantra vs Honda Civic

4 door sedans:

MPG - about the same
Power - comparible
Reliability - debateable
Size - about the same
Features - not the same
Safety - not the same

Some of the pros about the Civic (IMO) are that it is proven and reliable. Some of the pros I think I've found about eh Elantra is that it is loaded with features (ABS, front and front-side airbags, power everything, traction control, etc.

Some of the cons I've found about the Civic are that it has substantial road noise and might be a bit underpowered. Some of the cons I've found about the Elantra are mostly reported as problems with Hyundai.

The Elantra cars are much cheaper but provide more features. Of course, this is only of use if the car doesn't break down once a month.

I have some experience with Honda so I'm really only interested in knowing what you all know about Hyundai or the Elantra specifically.

I'm only comparing 2004-2006 models right now.

So... are you really asking for a comparison between probably the most proven/longest lasting car on the road today.. versus a throw-away paperweight on wheels?

That's like asking how the crash rating is on an old Yugo versus a Mercedes.

I want a car that starts every time I turn the key. If it has a seat, a steering wheel, a couple pedals, and some kind of radio to break up the monotony, I'm good. All the other "Stuff" is just more crap that can go wrong.

Do I detect a Canadian accent there "eh" . Good point Todd I would also say that Honda also has manufacturing plants here in Canada and I would dare to assume the same for the USA . I am not sure if Hyundai has the same so support the manufacture that provides some work for people here in North America.
If that doesn't help go with the Civic I have put over 380,000Km or 236,000 miles without any serious problems and past it on.

Definitely go with the Honda. My Brother in Law has a Hyundai and in the few years he's had it, it has fallen apart. It really is a crappy, throw away car. Honda is always gonna be your best bet.

My friend's daughter walked away from an accident she should have died in, according to cops on the scene. She was driving an Elantra. She bought another one the next day. Still has it 5 years later. She is a VP in one of the largest auto insurance companies in the US, can afford what ever she wants. She wants a Hundai.

The Hyundai is not a throw away car...thats BS...my brother has an '05 Elantra and its nothing short of dead nuts reliable...if it was so bad then why does Hyundai stand by their cars with a 10 year 100000 mile warranty? The only real complaint with the Elantra are the seats...they are hard sit too low to the floor and dont offer any real side bolsters. On our trip from NJ to NC my brother got 35 mpg and we were doing 65- 75 mph the whole way....I dont see how you could go wrong with the Elantra...for the money they offer alot of things as standard features..good luck with the decision making process..

My brother worked for them when he was in the detailing business. The interiors fall apart worse than any car he has ever dealt with, with Saturn not far behind. Also, that wonderful warranty?? Sounds great on paper, but what that covers is PARTS ONLY. You still have to pay the shop's hourly fees while they work on them. The hourly fees are usually far more expensive than the parts. At least.. that was the warranty just a couple years ago when we looked at them.

And also, in comparison. I checked the value of a 4 door 4cyl 2005 Hyundai versus the 4 door Honda Accord.

Elantra base price new: $13,400

Honda new: $16,200

NADA Blue book retail dealer value of same 2005 cars with 100k miles on them.

Elantra: $6,100

Honda: $11,600.

Total Loss of value in 5 years

Elantra 55%

Honda 28%

Another 5 years, you'd still have something with the Honda. The Hyundai... throw it away because it would be worth basically nothing. Sorry if the facts piss you off Ben.

You've got it all wrong. You need to watch the episode of Top Gear where they did a side by side comparison of a Dihatsu Metria and an Ascari A10.

These are the kind of comparisons that are revealing, not the ones that compare a Ford Contour to a Mercury Mistique.

FWIW, the Metria had an "in dash" CD player and air conditioning, which the A10 did not. Really. Who would buy a car without a stereo?
