  • Riding the America's, advice sought

I don't post enough, and admit to my tendency to post incomplete ride reports, but still -

I'm thinking about riding my 81 H (with a 79 motor) the length of the America's, leaving middle of 2011. Looking for advice on mods I should be thinking about doing first.

Already have the 750fd on there, vetter fairing and bags, though the bags might be swapped for something less plastic.

I'm also looking to add a sump plate, if someone has one, and can give advice, I would love it.
I've been in more than one Hemisphere, and I wrote a book to help you do it too (or just prepare better for that week long road trip). Going Small, not just for the little guys.

Interesting site (and bookmarked), but I'm not talking about the USA, but going up to Alaska (probably just as far as the Dempster, all that seems further north is bad roads and oil) then down to Argentina. So I'll have some time over 10,000 feet, some iffy roads, some time on boats. Should be fun. I could stay on 'good' roads but want to have options.

Things I'm thinking about are oil coolers (do I need one?) switching to spoked rims (I'm thinking no, but worry about big rocks), brake lines (currently oem, is there a point to going to braided metal? Anyone ever broke one?).

There might be other stuff too, someone here might have an idea or suggestion for. I want to spend some time prepping the bike and testing it out first.

        Hi Pain,
an XS11 would not be my first choice for that trip. It's not the bike's reliability as much as it's 600+lbs weight (and that's before you strap all the gear on) to be handled on poor roads and it's thirst for fuel where it's a long way between gas stations.
Me, I'd take your sidecar rig
        (see:- http://burrohas3wheels.com/ )
Or go buy myself a reasonably lightweight dual-purpose bike for a trip like that.

Stay away from the truck stop in Nome AK. I have heard some bad things about that place.
          Ich habe dich nicht gefragt.
