Yes when the REALLY big one hits, everything east of the Sierra Nevada Mountain Range will fall into the Atlantic Ocean!

That song came out back in 1969. I was living in Tucson and all the hippies and many others fled California because they thought the big one was going to happen that year and Calif. would break off and sink into the ocean

I lived in Redondo Beach, just south of

L.A. in the 80s. Went thru several quakes, one, a small one came at the morning commute. A lady in front of our house pulled her car over to the curb and got out to find out why her car was shaking. Looked it all over and, shaking her head, got back in and drove away.

In 89 I was driving home in my service truck and as I was passing a park and two girls were sqealing and laughing. Acting like they were loaded. At the same moment it felt like I had driven into the street gutter as if I was turning into a driveway. One big wrinkle in the earth.
Back in the late 70's early 80's Mamoth Lakes was having quakes like crazy. 7.4 I think was the biggest. It was nothing to feel 20 aftershocks a day. Best part was listening to the rock slides back in the mountains at each shaker. That and watching all of the tourists bailing out of town like it was on fire.

We came out of it great. Besides the safety of my family and the structural soundness of my older home, one of my big fears is that the lateral motion of a large quake will roll the motorcycles off of their side stands

I grew up in SoCAL, and that's just part of the cost of living there. They don't have the standard 4 seasons - Instead, they are earthquake, fire, flood, and drought. This is an annual cycle, and yes, this is now earthquake season.

I remember the Northridge quake, and the devastation it created. Especially in the freeway system just outside Santa Clarita valley. Those freeways are hundreds of feet in the air, and they just crumbled, killing several people. We lost a few gallons of water out of our big fish tank at the time, as the motion was very lateral and sloshed everything back and forth for quite a while.

We always had pre-fabbed wooden sticks in the kitchen, and when a quake hit, it was my job to run in there, grab the sticks, and slide them through the handles in the cabinets so the dishes couldn't fall out. I don't know how logical that was, but it gave me something to concentrate on besides the thought that I was going to die...

Sorry my earlier post was rather flippant. I didn't realize how hard you got hit up there.
I would be more concerned about my bike being rocked off of the center stand. As long as it's in firstt gear it should ride out anything short of a 7.5!

Whole lot of shakin

I was in a 7.2 in Mexico City in 2000 or 2001, don't remember. It hit at 3 am, I woke up to a mexican Screaming "Esta temblando, Esta temblando" I nodded my head and let it rock me back to sleep. All the neighbors in all the nearby buildings stayed in the street until about noon. Crazy.

Might be time to spare a thought for the people of Haiti. Not wanting to lessen the significance of the California earthquake but it pales somewhat when compared to the misery currently being experienced in Port Au Prince.
