so i am actually looking for some help in a hurry. it isn't a big problem, but my right turn signal light won't turn off. it doesn't flash, it just stays lit. i have the key out of the bike and in my hand, and the thing just keeps blazing away in my garage. I am gonna pull the battery if I can't get it to stop. have tried the left turn signal, works great, but doesn't stop the right. brake light works, and again, doesn't stop the right turn signal. in gear, out of gear, clutch in, clutch out, the thing just keeps on...any thoughts?

so does that mean that i need a whole switch, or i just need to tear it down and look? and if i am taking that apart, how does one adjust the angle of their handlebars? I am thinking of just keeping the same bars, just tilting them forward to give me a little more height and more of the look i want without having to change out all my cables and wires. but i might do that anyway. once i got the damn thing to start (three days in a row now!!!!! woooo hooo!!!) i was back on track with fixing and reworking and making it like new. wow, that was kinda long winded wasn't it?1980 XS 1100 Special (working to be my daily ride)

got the handlebars...so we are good on that. now, i am NOT arguing, i am learning...why do i have to pull the headlight? as i see it, all of the wires from the signal box run in one group, in one line, straight down the bars, and under the tank...they never go to the headlight...unless they split under the tank....1980 XS 1100 Special (working to be my daily ride)

I'm really not that patient but I got it done. Clean the area and wire to be soldered real well. I had to figure out where the wires were actually supposed to go but they fell pretty much back where they were supposed to be.
I'm sure there ar diagrams here somewhere for that.
I understand your exitement. Same way I felt when the old girl roared to life.

the wires from the switch deke up into the headlight shell.
There's a whole bunch of wiring and pull-apart multi-plugs inside there. Also single pull-aparts for the black grounding wires. Do NOT mix these up with the dark brown wires for the right-side signals.
The 6-way & the 5-way connectors come from the left-side handlebar controls.
Once you've pulled the connectors apart to troubleshoot the signal's odd behavior and put the connectors back together the hard part is rearranging all those wires and connections tidily enough to get the headlamp reflector back in.Fred Hill, S'toon

If I remember correctly the connections for all the signals meet in the headlight bucket. There is at least on connection that provides constant power. As the light stays on it is possible that the signal is connected to the wrong wire, the one that provides battery power.Ernie

I think?
It's cold in my garage or I would go look.
I could be wrong.Last edited by XSokieSPECIAL; 12-08-2009, 09:39 PM.

There are two plugs that come from the left hand bar switch which works the dimmer, the turn signals, the horn, and the hazard lights. (on my 81 models anyway) that both run down the bars between the gages and the fork tube on the left side and then under the tank. They never enter the headlight area. They plug into connectors in the wiring harness to the left of the coils directly under the tank and top frame tube about 6" behind the front of the tank. YMMV, but that is how they did it from the factory on my SH models.Life is what happens while your planning everything else!
