it was cold today in indiana, gentlemen. the day started at 19 degrees, and didn't get a whole lot warmer. it started with my furnace not wanting to turn on. so i am trying to warm my house with just the heat pump and that wasn't working. but my day got a lot better!!! not only is my house warm (wiring issue), but MY BIKE RUNS AGAIN!!!! i put in the new starter relay, and (to be honest, i was so excited i kinda flooded it a bit)after a few tries, the engine started up, and i got to take a ride! now i know why people like full helmets in the winter. little cold, but it was a great great great great ride and i am doing it again tomorrow!!! Thank you all so much for your invaluable advice and help!!!

19º would mean the long underwear, two pairs of socks, t-shirt, two hoodies, leather jacket, jeans and insulated overalls, balaclava, full face helmet, and some heat packs thrown in the gloves and boots.
By the time I got all that get up on, it would be summertime.
So, I mainly stick to the 40º+ temps. hehe

Nice going. I rode my 79 sf to my Mom's last Friday, which is about 140 miles round trip. The temp was about 30* and I did put the hand warmers in my gloves. I wasn't cold at all except about 20 miles from home on the return trip when my fingers started to go a little numb. The bike ran great though and it was a beautiful sunny day. I'd tuck my hands under the tank behind the head and they'd warm up some. With the throttle lock on I could keep both hands down there and the bike would go straight down the road. (Not that I recommend no hands on bars for an extended amount of time.) With the proper gear you can ride for most of the year in the NW but I don't usually ride when it's below freezing. 1st bike.....Where exactly in Indiana are you? Im in N.W. indiana bout 55 mins. east of Chicago.
I still dont have the brakes on 'Sunshine bled yet....had a little issue with a snapped off banjo bolt in the splitter valve. Put a new one on and trying to get the volumes of air out of the lines......at 19 degrees..its slow going.... but i did take a quick zip on 'Ghost. just enuf to heat the oils up to drain out and replace for the winter.....
For me it takes a pair of warm-up pants (the nylon kind with a liner in them) that i wear under a pair of flannel lined jeans....i put a set of Damart knee warmers on under the warm up pants ( badly busted up knees from highschool/college). Safety committee at work bucked up this year and got us these coats made by ArcticArmor....DAMN are they warm!!!

The ride was only about 15 miles, ears were numb when i got home, and tears were frozen to my cheeks, but well worth it. The garage was warm, and SWMBO had a steaming hot pot of coffee with a couple shots of brandy in it to thaw me out!!!!'81H (my first XS ) "Grey Ghost"

tom!!! love the pic, you did a great job with that. does she have a sister i could use for my picture? anyway, i live down in fishers (just north of indianapolis...just just north)i get up your way for work a bit. i just spent some time in Merrillville a few weeks back. and if that is how the coffee is served at your place, i might have to invite myself over for a cup or two! it looks like i might take the bike out tomorrow for a few quick spins if the weather does what it is supposed to....40 and no rain/snow. that is about the warmest it has been since the damn thing ran, so i am going to take advantage of it!!! stay warm!1980 XS 1100 Special (working to be my daily ride)Comment
