  • Another one found its way to me.

I was kind of keeping it quiet because I hadn't taken any pictures, but here it is a 1981 Special. I think this one is a candidate for a radical makeover, thinking urban street fighter. No bobber though, I like a softer ride.

Anyway, in only 10K miles the POs manged to f#ck up first and second gears, the engine purrs like a kitten though.

Strangely, it came with '79 carbs that the PO couldn't figure out. He ordered the wrong rebuild kits!!!

With Phil's expert assistance we scrounged up the right mains and jets and got it running. She started right up and sounds like a brand new bike!!
And someone made the fuse block mod, but I doubt the side cover with fit over it.

It also came with a non-XS front MC and the lever has a broken piece. This piece is pushes against the return spring and is what keeps it within reach of your fingers.

BTW - It came without a seat or side covers. It has the buckhorns with extenders (think immeadiate replacement)!! And will need a headlight ring (bad scuff mark), headlight ears (rusty), probably the right fork (rusty), rear signal lights (broken), tires (old), and a battery. But for $125 I can't really complain. Just what I need.... another project, and I'm not even holed up for the winter. I ride as much as possible.
The "J" and the "G" look good together, don't they?

Hmmm, Those look like pre 80 carbs. The top isn't stamped steel.

I guess the type between the pics is hard to see...
Yes they are '79 carbs. Why, when, where, who??? Who knows the reasons. But they're cleaned and rebuilt now and working like a charm.

Wow, what a deal you got compared to my project bike. I see ALOT less work in that one!! Arrest that man for XSive grand theft!!

Never seen one with the yellow for the Kph scale before either.

I think these bikes have built in tracking devices .
It seems that now they know they are in need of good owners or end up in the scrap yard,
they are morphing their way to entusiastic owners.
I had one, A hard ridden 178k black B***H that needed TLC and got it .A 79 std
then a badly dismantled one arrives, it offered its parts up . A 79std
then for Some unknown reason I aquire another for the contents of my pocket $20. A 80 english assembled std
I now have recieved an Email offering me two more!!!
One is a Just running needs work. An 81 special
the other is "in 5 apple boxes" but all there. Another 79 std

              Hey, Cobia...
Don raises a good observation there...
Have you checked the VIN yet?
I wonder if that's a Special made in a different country?

I haven't seen a Special's Speedo like that either... At least not an American version.

                  They have a sucker radar!!

                  Hey guys,
No I haven't checked the VIN yet but I will later today and report back. I was very curious about the yellowing of the tach and just thought I may have been caused by sun bleaching (?).
And actually this 81SH is my fourth one. This year I bought, fixed, and sold a '79 std.

Four? Wow, Cobia! That's quite a family stable you got going there!

                    Way cool...

In one way, i wish there were more 11's for sale around OK... in another, it's probably a good thing there's not... They are addictive!

For now though... one's enough... all the fun I need!

Happy Thanksgiving to you & yours, Cobia.

Thanks Bob, likewise to you and yours.
And it's only three now. I had a 79F that I fixed and sold.
So, it's ONLY three now. Hope times don't get too rough where I have to sell one (definitely not the G, and I really like the J) so maybe I won't sell any of them!!! Or my association starts giving me grap for taking up too many parking spaces.

                        It's American!!

It's definitely made for the American market.
VIN starts with 4R0, now what's up with the yellow red line????

Not that I am any kind of expert, but I do not have anything like that on my two 4RO machines.

Looking at the speedo, it's sun faded. Tach is probably the same. It's not as bad as out west, with WHITE "red" line paint.... If it's an early to mid 80 vin, it could be a factory frankenbike.
