  • USS Cobia

Just found out that I will be staying with my son aboard the USS Cobia friday night. I don't know anything else about this sub but it sounds like a fun trip. Just hope I can fit through the Hatch. Just in case maybe I should take some extra grease LOL!

Representative of the Gato class submarines, USS Cobia earned four battle stars and is credited with sinking six Japanese vessels (over 500 tons). Cobia was dedicated by the people of Wisconsin in 1970 as an International Memorial to submariners throughout the world and placed on display at the Wisconsin Maritime Museum, a Smithsonian Affiliate, and the largest maritime museum on the Great Lakes. Today she is totally restored and boasts operational radar and radios. The overnight education programs are extremely popular.

Twenty-eight fleet boats were built by Manitowoc Shipbuilding Company during the war. Although not built at Manitowoc, Cobia is virtually identical to the submarines built here and is symbolic of the great industrial achievement and effort of the people of Wisconsin toward winning World War II.

USS Cobia is a National Historic Landmark.

I toured the sub in the early 1990's! It was a great monument to those who sailed in the sub force in WW2. It DIDN'T have all the equipment working when I went through, but was cool anyway. IIRC, there is room inside as long as you don't try to pass anyone.

I've toured the pampanos (I believe that's the name) which is moored (or was) in SF. It was an interesting tour, but it's been modified for having tours go through it, with a hole cut in the pressure hull and an entrance added above that. It was featured in the movie down periscope and the exterior shots of the supposed sub in the movie were of that sub. Having gone through the tour before the movie, I could easily tell that the interior shots were NOT of that sub, they had WAY WAY WAY too much room. As for being able to get through, I'm a BIG guy, and I was able to make it through, although there was not a lot of extra room.

My pal who retired from nuke subs says that there are really only two kinds of boats: "Subs" and "Targets"
