  • New to Yamaha

Hi to everyone. I'm David and I live in Peterborough Ontario Canada. I was looking for a bike big enough to carry me (load capacity) and have space to take my wife riding. I saw an ad on Kijiji for an XJ1100. I knew nothing about these bikes so I found this site using a Google search for "Yamaha XJ1100".

The info available on this site gave me the confidence to pursue the purchase of a 1982 XJ1100 with 47,582 kms on it. I paid $1700 plus $260 for a complete brake job (rebuild the three calipers, new pads all around and flush and replace fluid front and back) and the safety. The bike has new tires, new battery, new paint and a recovered seat. The PO owned it for seventeen years and it was well maintained.

I have it plated but it is not insured so I won't be enjoying riding it until next year.

Welcome David!! Congrats on the XJ..Very cool bike.

I'd like to know who you go to do all three brakes for that kind of money. I think they charge $200 just for letting you roll it into the shop around here.

Hi David: I'm in Ont. too but quite north of you on Manitoulin Island. Yeh you gotta hellava deal with the brake job for that kinda cash. I have a sticky back pad & will change out all the other pads like you did & flush out the rear one. Hopefully it won't stick anymore & I will be sucessful doing it myself. You'll like the bike (their heavy - I like heavy) and have tons of smooth power - Dan

Congrats on a kewl bike. Well you wanted something heavy, and thats exactly what you got.

I Still think we have the best bikes on the road, but have several people arguing with me about that one. Can tell you one thing, they are still kings on the road even though they are 30 years old (like mine).

Love watching the facial expression on some guys faces when you kick their butts on a stretch with a 30 year old bike, and if you loose.... so what, just go to the guy, look him in the eyes, shake his hand and tell him: "Congrats you just won a 30 year old bike". They tend to feel very small in that situation, and that way you still win the race......hahahaha. So in short, no matter what, our bikes are king

        Happy and safe driving

            Welcome !

Congrats David on the purchase of a great bike. There's a bunch of us here in Ontario. Watch the Southern Ontario Riders thread in the members forum. It would be a good way to meet some of the local members.

Congrats, David on your bike purchase & welcome to the forum!
Always glad to have another 'brother' XJ owner here! Sounds like the price was about right, if the condition's good.

You'll like it, trust me. There are some differences between yours, and the rest of the 11 lineup... most are improvements that were made, some you have to scratch your head and wonder... 'What the heck were they thinkin'??'
(Re: battery warning light on the pilot box.)

If you run on to anything in particular that you have a question about, don't hesitate to send me a PM...

Posting questions around here is how we ALL learn more, so don't be afraid to ask.

Soon as you get around to it, we'd love to see a few pics of her! (Please read the thread by Catatonicbug about how to post them...)

And be cautious... as was mentioned earlier, these are heavy, powerful bikes and they will get away from you if you're not used to 'em... check into a rider safety course if you haven't already done so. You'll be glad you did. We've had our share of injuries and wrecks this year... one fatality that I'm aware of.
So ride wisely... remember, you're 'invisible' when you're on that thing to the other drivers.

Lots of great info here, just read... plenty to keep you busy this winter!

                    Have fun, & ride safe!!
                    Regards,
                    Bob
