  • Lesson Learned on Ebay

Watch out on Ebay, I found that a cycle shop is parting out bikes and selling on ebay. Problem is they do not know an XS from an XJ! Ordered the headlight brackets for my project bike and when they arrived they are for an XJ, not really a close fit at all!!

Worst part is, I called and told them, they tell me they will be nice and refund me if I send the part back but it IS for an XS. Now, they label all the parts from one bike with a four digit part number, I looked and found the tank, and seat, and TCI, and many other parts for the same bike on Ebay by them listed as XS1100. It is CLEARLY an XJ. I told the guy they need to fix this before to many others have the same problem as most of the non motor parts ARE different!!

Anyway, the place is called Pinwall Cycles so pay REALLY close attention.

Yep, got a set of front pegs from them and yes, they are from an XJ. They fit just fine though, and they look pretty good on the old XS. When I got them they were labeled 82 XS.

That's the issue. They must not realize that the XS stopped in '81 and became the XJ. I hate when people sell stuff and they don't know what they are selling!!!

I have had a couple XJs over the years, and here in IL, all of the titles have had 82 XS1100 as the model designation. The same thing with my insurance cards. So, it seems that if you run the VIN around here, it will come back as an XS. Which makes sense to me; it's basically an 82 XS.

That's ok, my title says XS, but my insurance card says XJ, both with the same VIN.

I had the same thing happen - same seller

I bought a grab bar for an XS1100 and it was from an XJ - I unfortunately had already left feedback based on the condition of it when it arrived without looking whether the mounting holes would line up. Cheap lesson I guess.

Anyone need an XJ1100 grab bar??

Yeah, I fear they will change nothing as it gets their parts sold.

Well, with ebay's new rules, if they get enough negative feedback, their membership will be revoked. It actually doesn't take much for that to happen now.

I emailed this seller to let him know a seat was for a xj not a xs and asked him to do his research.
But with many people letting him know this is not correct, then is it not misleading that he will not change the listing?
                    His responce to me was
                    Quote

                    http://www.motoverse.com/tools/vinDe...10M00XCA002067
this is the vin decode for the bike we disassembled (number off of the
frame), we do not try nor have the time to mislead, this bike was brand new
27 years ago, during the life of the bike it may have had one owner or
several, unfortunately the salvage yard we purchased it from on 8/27/2009
did not give us the previous owner(s) name(s) to be able to follow up with
any modifications the vehicle may have had over the last quarter century, we
do try very hard to use resources at our disposal to accurately identify
parts however we include pictures in the listing for people as yourself that
know your bikes and can make an informed decision if this is indeed the part
you want and that it will fit your bike, for example, i ride goldwings and
have intimate knowledge of gl1200 goldwings in particular, i can tell the
difference between a 1984 goldwing engine and all other gl1200 year engines,
now with that said a 1984 engine will fit in all the other years (1985,
1986, 1987), if someone parted a 1987 goldwing out and unbeknown to him the
previous owner blew his engine and replaced it with a 1984 engine, i would
have a hard time contacting that person and making an accusation of trying
to mislead the public, but i would contact him and advise him that he may
have made a mistake. accusations of dishonesty should not be thrown out
                    lightly.
THIS SEAT IS NOT FOR A XS IT IS FOR A XJ1100
                    YOU ARE MISLEADING

I just sent him another message referring him to the VIN list on this forum, and letting him know that the Motoverse VIN decoder he used is incorrect.

He claims extensive knowledge in Goldwings - perhaps he should stick to selling goldwing parts!

I bought a part from them a few weeks ago for my XJ. The listing said 82 XS but fortunatly for me I knew better. I also had my old part to compare with the picture.

What you should have told him is that XJ parts can sell for for more as they tend to be a little harder to find.

Yeh, I emailed them at the start of the auctions and told them they were xj1100 parts and that they didn't make a 82 xs11. They thanked me for the info and did nothing. Couldn't you tell by the pics?

I bought a Vmax starter from them for my venture. same damn part and same picture was listed in the venture parts list too and the price was $150 more if you bought it for the venture. Maybe was a generic pic, but it sure looked the same.

Everything else they sell should be friggen gold plated NOS by their pricing. I can ALWAYS beat pinwall by 50% pricing difference buy searching dilligently and waiting a few days until what I want shows up. Case in point, the right upper fairing for my venture usually runs $250-300 at pinwall, but I got one that had no cracks (try and find one like that on pinwall) for $55 shipped.

They do know the difference, but XJs were only made one year, so not many people buy stuff for them, but if they scam it as XS stuff, they can sell it faster. TBH I am surprised they don't list it as XJ stuff and jack the price up $200 since it is soooo rare.
                            Ich habe dich nicht gefragt.

I'm undressing My 78XSE "BAT" and rebuilding as an "old school bobber" I've got the ears and square headlight assembly.Got the square type rear turn signals. Now I'm trying to figure out (before I pull the fairing) whats the right turn signals for the front and how they're mounted. Seen at least 10 different types of signals advertised as front signals for a 78XS1100 on Ebay. I can't believe Yamaha used that many different signals in 1 year!!!
Anyway BAT was # 473 off the line. So somebody please tell me what the heck I'm looking for and how they're mounted. Thanks and God Bless America. MIKE and BAT
PS: I've bought many parts off Ebay advertised as EXCELLENT CONDITION that were in worse shape than what I was replacing.
