  • 20 years ago tonight...

Watching the news tonight brings back memories.

Germany is celebrating the 20 year anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall.

That night I was a young Sergeant, the CQ (Charge of Quarters..glorified babysitter..) of Delta Company soldiers at 3/5 Cav, in Kirchgoens, Germany. Listening to the radio I was amazed to hear that the wall was being torn down.

The next morning when I got off duty I ran into my German neighbor, and he was all but jumping up and down with excitement...

I left Germany in late December of '89, but before I left I remember the nonstop parties at the local gasthauses (bar/hotels).. cars would be parked all around the block and everyone was celebrating.

I also remember the little 2 stroke Trabants that were suddenly out struggling along on the autobahn laden to the top with Western goods, and headed back to the East at 50mph or so, (I especially remember the one that was completely loaded with potato chips!).

Those are good memories, glad I was there to experience it...

I was in Headquarters, 3rd Recon, 5th Cav when it was reactivated in 1957 at Ft Carson, CO. I was supply clerk. They were training basic trainees then. I really liked it, when there was labor to be done, request a few trainees, and just weatch them do the work.

I was stationed at the Tempelhof in Berlin for 1 1/2 years in the early 70's. I can't even imagine how much it has changed.
