A Question about Rear Tire Fit

I know this has been talked about, but I want to make sure before I expend all the work....

I've been thinking about changing the rear wheel on my '78E to a 16", but have been putting that off due to the smaller diameter (more highway revs). But tire selection for the 17" wheel just sucks. It's been mentioned that some guys have managed to get the larger '140' sized tire to fit, just that you can't run the raised letters or they'll hit.

So, is this '140' the same as the 'MU90B16' listed on the Dunlop Elite 3 site? The section width is listed as 5.57". If it is, I'm looking to go to the next size up (160/80B16) and will check out the possibility of enlarging the 'notch' in the swingarm (seeing as I now have a spare swingarm). If the Dunlop size data is correct and someone has fitted the MU90B16 tire successfully, I only need to pick up about 1/4" of additional clearance to get the bigger tire on and it looks like it may be there. This will give me pretty much the same overall diameter as a 17" tire/wheel combo.

Yeah, the swingarm will probably need some reinforcement after cutting it, but that's not a bad thing in any case.

    Any help and/or comments?

Before you go notching the swingarm, look into spacing out the 'clutch hub' (the drive hub in the wheel). Another member here has done that with no noticeable tracking problem. It unbolts and you can add spacer washers to get more clearance.
