I've seen that video before.I think the tach is broken and I don't get why he starts it up and revs the p**s out of it while it's coldI sure would like to get my hands on that turbo setup though.

Some turbo engines don't idle well. It takes a fair amount of revving to get the turbo to spin.

It depends on whether you build a low compression high boost type or high compression low boost.

A freind of mine built a twin-turbo engine for his 4x4. He built it with 6.5:1 compression, and lots of boost, but the engine was terrible in a 4x4 because you had to keep the revs up all the time or it would stall. It would have worked great in a sand dragster, or mud bogger where you hold the pedal down and hold on.

Your friend didn't know much about turbo charged systems, did he?? 6.5:1 is fine for a SUPERCHARGED engine, but NOT a turbo. I think 8:1 is about as low as I would go with a turbo.
As I'm getting parts together, I WILL be building an XS with a turbo from scratch. I just hope I can get close to what I'm trying to design for power and reliability.

Well, you can run that low on a turbo engine, but it will run best only in the upper rpms.

I may be off a bit on the numbers, as well, but that was the gist. If he let the rpms drop too low it would bog and stall. It ran great, if you wanted to mud bog. It was a 350ci chevy and ran very well at 6000rpm. Last I saw the engine it was in the garage covered in dust.

Normally, on a 4x4, you want the peak torque down ~3000rpms. Derwat's peak is at 2800rpm.

Let's just say we've learned a lot over the last 25 years...

So now for the dumb question. I am guessing it is a single carb placed at the turbo inlet. Am I correct? Never owned or worked on any turbos except various marine diesels.(49500Hp to 250Hp) Those are all fuel injected so please forgive my ignorance.

Was thinking the same thing, What was the carburation system he is using. Looks like a manifold over the carb ports to the engine.

This is a standard ATP bolt-on turbo kit built by American Turbo Pak in the eighties (apart from the sawn off exhaust). It uses one Keihin Harley style carb (suck through). Mixture is blown into the cast mainfold. I had one of those fitted to my bike before I switched to fuel injection and later to the Aerocharger. These kits were able to make big horsepower but a pain in the neck when setting up the carb. My problem was that it could either be tuned properly low down or in the upper rev range, but not in both.....
The blow off valve was a dead cheap version as well, not nearly as good as the modern ones.
But if you're planning on riding with stock compression and 8 psi of boost max, you can ride forever with this set up and keep up with traffic

Nice write there Mathh, seems you all on the other side of the pond tended to do these sort of "upgrades" more than here. Could be you have access to MORE options.........no hijack intended, but what seems to be the general concensus on "upgrading" to the Venture/V-Max cam chain slack adjuster? C'mon, don't hold back, give us some input to that thread pertaining to this.
