I have a project for you, it's a Pontiac so you should be able to handle it.
68--69-?
A friend of mine had one of those in about 75 or 76. Speedo only went up to 140 or 160, can't remember. It wasn't high enough though.
Sucked 3 rear windows out of that thing flying down desolate Montana highways.
Reminds me that I should not by any stretch of the imagination have ever made it to the age I have.
Methinks the son being in an institution of higher learning may not be working. A classic CB750 has many more cool points dripping off it than a Shadow.
My boss has an 81 CB750 custom in great condition and a co worker has a three year old 1100 Shadow. When the two are parked beside each other, the Shadow creaks with jealousy. It actually gets embarrassed and asks to have it's fake cooling fins put in the fake plastic leather looking hard bags.
Didn't those old CBs come with a free can of cool beans?
Tell him part of being a responsible adult is fixing your ride(s)!
You won't even CONSIDER letting him USE the shadow, until he shows he can maintain the one he has!
Don't we all remember that speech?
That's exactly what I had to do before I got to drive the family car. I had to be able to do the basics - Change the tires (including rotate them), change the oil, adjust the brakes ('68 VW Bug, that was required), etc... I'm glad I was forced to do that stuff, because it made me a LOT more confident in the vehicle, AND my abilities to fix stuff in the future.
I would suggest a Saturday clinic in the driveway, with you watching him fix it, so you can answer any questions he has.

Mine was bright yellow (new paint) with dark windows.
I blew up the 2spd powerglide backing out of the garage, one day.
I had it parked at my (at the time) girlfriend's father's business, went to BC to help my parents get thier boat ready for sea, and he sold his business and the new owner had my car towed.
The wrecking yard flipped it up on the side so they could sell the tranny linkage. They didn't even own it yet.
They didn't bother to notice the paint was new, the engine and tranny were new, it had a Holley strip dominator manifold and Carter 600 Thermoquad.
I got a freind to buy the engine for $300. Stupid things you do when your 18 and don't know any better.
I've posted a few times here in the past about my rod that I owned for 10 years, and resurrected from the dead out of a PO's front yard...
Loved that car, and had lots of great times & many memories in it... but had to trade it in on a new SUV back in '90 for my growing families needs...
Tonight I stumbled upon a pic of one just like it... even the color... and in action. Check out the trap times... that's why I loved mine. Saw many passes @ Tulsa International Raceway. Great bracket racer on the weekends, daily driver the rest of the time.
Couldn't get the pic to go through photobucket, so I'm just posting the link, if you're interested.
My oldest son conned me out of an old pickup with a blown engine a year before he got his drivers license. He removed the six/three speed manual and replaced it with a V8/auto. He even built his own drive shafts (4X4) which I thought was pretty good for a kid that had to go buy a welder at a garage sale. He is 30 now and still owns that truck. He paid his own way through college by picking up other vehicles that people had given up on and making them driveable and selling them. But even he got a completely redone Suzuki GS550 out of me by suggesting it for a wedding present to himself! Somewhere I got a soft spot and no amount of bondo hardener will fix it.

If there are more than three bolts holding it on there, it is most likely a very important part!
