If anyone wants something like it, I still have the form tool I ground to make the radius. I think my next shot will be with some delrin, since aluminum wears quickly. I can work up a price of the ball and a 1/4 x 20 stud. It wouldnt be difficult to make a different thread either. I can machine the clamp as well, but it would be lengthy and require more cussing, so it would probably be cheaper to find some other 7/8 clamp to bolt it to.

Nice job

You could use a RAM ball in place of the aluminum ball to get past the wear issue. I drilled and tapped my steering stem nut for a RAM mount several months ago. Great location for a GPS.

If you go back and read the post, you'll see that I said any thread would be possible. If you need Whitworth or a twin lead acme thread, you'll need to supply the tap.

Heck, I could even do a 6.35 x 1.27 mm thread with a 60 degree thread profile, with a matching single point threaded stud.

Distracted? From what? You mean, having a GPS? I suction-cup mine to the gas tank, and it works fine.

If you put that ball-thingy out further on the bars, it might work as a d-ring hanger for helmets too!

so who do you think won't recognize a 1/4"UNC thread if it's dressed up as a Frenchman?
FWIW the standard camera tripod mount thread the world over is 1/4"Whitworth. Also a 1/4"-20 thread but with a 55º thread angle.
My BSA has 1/4"UNC Allen screws that happily thread into the 1/4"Whitworth threads in it's engine castings so the thread angle ain't all that critical.
