Ya know, Ben... that's a tough call. I know what you mean. I think mine looks pretty good, and I love having all the storage space the Vetter hard bag setup gives me. Sometimes I don't know how I could do w/o it.
But, w/o a doubt, I know it would look a lot better if I took all the bags, trunk, and fairing off... I have thought about it seriously.
But, just like my trunk... it's a cave... it'll hold so much stuff... and there's been lots of times I've had it FULL! Plus, I have large LED brake lights on it... and I don't want to lose that feature... might just save my backside sometime...
But it would be nice to feel what it would handle like lightened up for a change... if it weren't so darn much work to swap back & forth!
There are a lot of nice bag choices out there now though that do look pretty good... so yeah, I see the debate.
To each his own... I like the storage, the comfort, & the extra convenience.
That's why I bought this bike in the first place. It had all that.'82 XJ1100J Maxim (has been sold.)

Definitely agree. Nicest Maxim I've ever seen. He had that little extra vent lip on the windshield he had added... remember? He said that really helped a lot to divert the air & reduce the buffeting around his helmet he experienced after he cut the tall shield.
Still can't believe the way that bike left his stable... I don't think he can either!
He recently added another nice bike to the fold last month... an "04 Black BMW 1150 RT. That makes 3 for him now.'82 XJ1100J Maxim (has been sold.)

Wow... thanks Ben.
Thanks for posting that pic.
Brings back some good memories.
Wasn't surprised how much $$$ it brought, just sad that it ended up in some museum as some rich guys prize... like a thoroughbred put to pasture too soon.
I'll never forget Denice's reaction when Cody told her the news... priceless.
When he first bought it, she voiced her opinion rather loudly of it...
When it sold, she cried almost as loudly. It had become part of their family.
Mine's nice, but it'll never be 'Zilla.
Thanks again Ben. It was good to see her again.'82 XJ1100J Maxim (has been sold.)

My pleasure I have this pic on my desktop...background...where is this bike now? I had heard someone here in NJ bought it but then some heresay said it went overseas...man I know Cody wanted and got his Connie-14 but this bike to me was priceless... No matter what I do to mine it too will never ever come close to the level that Cody attained with 'Zilla... I mean there are alot of excellent bikes here at CH11 but "Zilla is at the top of the heap..IMHO1980 XS650G Special-Two

This is all up for opinion I guess, but honestly, a good clean naked bike sitting there the way it was designed and looking good like Ben's did, is far prettier in my opinion. I think fairings and windshields really detract from the looks.
That being said, I wouldn't ride 50 miles without one.
As for Jeremy...
I still think there's more to the story... you just haven't "pulled the hood" to show it yet...
That's just the deal. HE has never pulled the hood yet.. so doesn't even know if it's stock or what probably. He does sport a mighty nice rooster tail in the rain, I've heard, with that chopped rear fender. If we can ever get Hippie Dave to ride up north again with his 11... he can show Jeremy how one should run.

I can vouch for Jeremy's "rooster tail" ! That was funny... he had this big wet streak about 8" wide all up the back of his jacket! LOL
But, man.... that bike hauls butt! Definitely quick.'82 XJ1100J Maxim (has been sold.)
