  • The big debate

Well for me anyways...to dress the Max in a fairing or not? After 960 miles for XSEast without the fairing and with one 250 mile ride in the rain...and all the other LD rides..I have been wishing for my Windjammer...but I sold it to blue giant...however he wasnt really needing it since he got himself a Venture Royale,so I was able to get it back...couldnt beat the deal and he met me in Syracuse NY at a Tim Hortons of all places(I picked it ofc) anyhow I am now ready for some real cruzin'. OFC a pic is obligatory...I was able to do all the work myself...after watching TC and Jim(ossjughead) I had plenty of background for what needed to be done...actually the hairiest part was getting inside the headlamp bucket and disconnecting everything to remove the bucket(it would have interfered with the steering and the fairing)then making sure I got everything reconnected correctly...which I did. This time its staying on...and really it does not look so bad with it. The weather protection it offers is well worth it... plus i have 2 sets of lowers as well

    Debate

No debate about it. I use to ride bikes naked years ago when i was young and dumb, but as I got older i liked the less wind and rain on me. That is why my XJ and 80SG both have fairings on them. All 4 of my boys hate them. But on this fall ride in Ill my boy and i got caught in a downpour, he got soaked twice but i was dry both times. The only thing that i need to do is cut the windshield down a couple inches, with the rain and after dark is was real hard to see through the windshield. That is why I have 2 extras hanging in the garage.
    Thanks Tom

      Ben,

You probably figure that I'll bust your chops about seeing another picture of your beloved XJ... so didn't want to disappoint you.

Truth is, your bike's one of the nicest examples of what an old Maxim should look like, I don't ever mind. (HeHeHe...)

Don't blame you a bit, I'd be hard pressed to get rid of my windjammer...
especially w/ a good set of lowers... this time of the year!

Can't beat 'em... just makes a great bike like the Maxim that much greater!

Ohhh... and I like the new trunk! Looks good.

      PS... thanks for the pic...

But those big bulky fairings, backseats, center stands, hard bags and blinkers make you go slower. You gotta streamline your bike for land speed records! Just kidding, whatever floats your boat.

The Vetter really is hard to beat for comfort, as I am sure you know. I had one on my XJ and have a large windshield on the Midnight. The windshield does not give as much protection but is not near as bulky and heavy so is a decent compromise. I wouldn't want to do any real mileage on a naked bike though.

Your XJ looks real nice btw.

Some of us do like to be comfortable when we ride Jeremy, even if we can't keep up with you.

There's no debate and no question about it. Riding with a fairing is the way to go. Running with a 60 mile an hour wind in your face all day is for the young lads who have not discovered the comfortable environment that exists behind a fairing. I know because I used to be one of them :-)
              The bike looks great.
Myself I opted for a simple clean unit that does not take too much away from the bikes appearance because I am trying to keep the bike stock and visible.

Ya know, Jeremy... had you & I not met the way we did, I might've argued w/ ya some about that...

                but I won't...

If speeds your bag... listen to the boy. He knows what he's talkin' bout.

But... if you do the long ride, or are old farts like me... gettin' cold or wet ain't "cool"... especially @ higher speeds.

So, ya compromise, like me. Mine's no indy pace car, but it's no "grandma's grocery getter" either. Compromise... decent speed, decent comfort...
and sometimes you gotta let the kids go on by.

But Jeremy... what ya gonna do if I decide to strip her down one day and go with an 1197? Might be fun...

HeHeHe...yeah I dont mind you bustin' my chops...LOL Ok that'll be it with the pics ...this year Unless i add some other nifty things.
Thanks ffor the compliments...as I too have gotten older I have become spoiled with having protection from the hiway blasts...fighting that all day is tiring. Funny all the years I've been riding this bike without a fairing...it wasn't until I bought my Honda ST1100 2 years ago, that I really became spoiled at having full wind and weather protection...As long as i had the ST I didnt need a fairng on the XJ...but now that its my sole ride I wanted to do the LD rides more comfortably...so now I'm lovin' it. let the cold weather come..I love that too...

It looks like you haven't done the air pod mod, did you change out your jets? I highly recommend you modify your pods for better gas mileage and more power or change them out with the XS K&N look alikes. It made a very noticeable difference to de-restrict the carbs.

Well..... let's just say that Tod's 1179 won't beat me, but I do have a weight advantage.

No argument there... but you've seen me... I have that same advantage...
at least where the rider's concerned.

I still have the stock box, but have a "Maximan modified" K&N filter to fit the box. It's got a new Dynojet... which really helped.

I still can't believe pods / jets are your only mod! I know weight's a big factor, but holy cow...

                        Tod's got pods on his...

I still think there's more to the story... you just haven't "pulled the hood" to show it yet...

Thanks Harry...I've done 11000+ miles so far this year of which 7000 have been on the XJ... the other 4K were on my ST before I sold it...only wish I had it earlier this year...I am thinking of finding some hard bags and turning it into a bagger but I'm still debating that one as I'm afraid it might take away from the look of the bike, unless I can find the right bags...we'll see

You know its is debatable that pod filters add anything other than good looks ...to the performance of the bike...I have real K+Ns' and my carbs have been rejetted a couple times before I got it right..what really helped tremendously was the YICS Eliminator Tool that is in there permanently blocking off those YICS ports. As soon as I did that and had the carbs re-synched thw motor just purrs and throttle response is much more crisp...and low end launchs are much smoother too
