Sounds to me like deer whistles give them a good target to hone in on.I think point your bike at the deer,apply breaks,wait for the stupid deer to move,then steer the other way.Best chance??

I think best chance would be to steer for the deer. It is my experience that they inevitably turn around and go the other way once they run a few feet.

I have deer whistles on all my vehicles. Not perfect, but its better than nothing. I stuck them on the ears holding the headlight. Seem to help with buzzards, meadowlarks, and turtle doves. Effective on deer except during mating season and fawns don't seem to pay attention to them. Even if they are 90% effective, it's better than nothing.

One of the simplest tricks to bag a mule deer when I used to hunt them was to whistle at them. They could be bouncing along at full clip...whistle and they would stop and look at you a good percentage of the time...just curious enough to land in the stew pot.

Last year I bought one of those electronic deer chaser gizmos. Spent a couple of hours installing it in one of the horn grills on the Vetter. Wired it to a tiny switch on the handlebar so I could easily turn it on when I got to deer country. It generated a kinda whistling warble that ran from the subsonic up to ultrasonic and back down again.

My riding buddies made me take it back off the bike almost right away, the noise is irritating to say the least. One of them at least bought it from me for $5. He says he is going to take it deer hunting as he has never seen anything attract deer so fast! It was kind of like setting up a band in your back yard, as soon as the noise starts all the neighbors start heading in your direction to see what is happening. We would see deer in the ditch and I would turn it on and they would all start for the road to see what it was.

I just bought one of these and it's a copy of a Power Trip jacket called the flak Jacket. It does have quite a bit of padding but I doubt it would stop a deer...I bought it because it would be the only time I would ever have abs.

We have the same sort of products down here, electric " shoo-roo" & the whistles. when you buy them here your not told they work most effectively under 80 kph.

I'm the same as Pat ,I had them on my rig, I found they didn,t scare the animals much, what it did do though was made them stand up or move a bit so if you hadn't seen them before, at least you knew they were there & could take action.

hope your mates alright, it is a hazard we live with country wide down here, from inside city limits to open road.

Yes,and I'm gong to give the ride an A- but the local facilities in Mitchel are adequate at best.No premium or mid grade fuel available.There is a small store and a couple of diners,public restroom and a small park.I'll do a little more scouting over on this side of the mountains and post my findings on the rally thread.

I guess we just have to learn more about deer, the areas we ride in, and be aware of the possibiliy that they might be coming right at us at any time!

I don't think they work..... but.....I have them on my 18 wheeler anyway.

Had a pair on our minivan and one ran in front of wife damaging van.

I think the theory is the sound emitted gets their attantion and they freeze in place. This would work for the ones razing by the side of the road. If they are running and come to a road they are going to cross.

My big-rig is so loud I think it drowns out the whistle of the whistles. I have them on the grille and on the mirrors. I know the ones on the mirrors annoy me.

I personally have never hit a deer but I did ride through a small herd on I-5 at 65 mph on my Honda 400 (many years ago). Scared the p00p outta my.

I was thinking about this issue a few days ago. It seems deer are not restricted to rural areas anymore, and are often found in some rather urban areas. I have seen little deer "whistles" that people put on cages to send out a high-pitched sound to scare the deer away before the vehicle gets there. Do they work? Would it make sense to put them on a bike?

A guy here in Michigan wasn't so lucky with a deer this weekend. I get real leary when I'm out riding past the corn fields around this area because they come out of nowhere.

Glad he wasn't hurt worse, and that he's going to be ok.

I had a similar close call last month on Talimena Drive...
That doe was as big as my XJ... and I got a real close look, if ya know what I mean! Too close. We both saw the fear in each other's eyes...
Figure I missed her by about 3 feet.
I was travelling along at 65mph @ the time.
Shudder to think about the "what ifs".
