  • Its Alive!!!

I thought I'd start a seperate thread. I got it started and running. The suggestion given that I switch the primary coil wires worked. I was frankly skeptical that it would work since the pickup coil and timing assy is the same one that was always on the bike, I just moved it to the new motor. But I was getting fire out the carbs, and switched the wires and tapped the starter and it fired instantly. Of course I had the tank off, and the vaccum lines were sitting open since I didn't actually expect it to work, so I turned it right back off and put the tank back on.

Now I'm trying to decide whether to painfully figure out how to put the airbox back together (since I was foolish and took it out by dissasembling it to make getting the motor out and in easier, and realized later that I should have unhooked the mounts for it from the frame instead of what I did. So I'm toying with putting pod filters on, but I really don't want to have to rejet. Is there a chance of not needing a rejet with Jardine 4-2 spaghetti pipes and pod filters or am I dreaming? I think I'm liking the idea of leaving it easy to get the carbs out and in to work on them, but I'm not really wanting to spend the time rejetting the carbs. So, what do you think my chances are? And where is the best deal on decent pod filters that won't break my budget?

Having checked the plugs after pulling the old motor I know it was running about right as it was, so not having opened the carbs (was running good and strong when I bought it and so far it doesn't appear to have changed yet, so maybe it was rejetted when the jardines were put on. I'm wondeing if I will need to change them though if I go to pods, is so I may go through the pain of putting the airbox back together (which I'm NOT looking forward to.)

If you go with the pod filters you'll have to rejet...but you knew that already Eh? Glad to hear you got it running...these bikes are like a tug of war...some days you're winning some days its winning... oh and if you remove the carbs ...you'll need to resynch them.

Yep , reassembling the air box is a real PITA. It can be done and may take more than one great mind, but it can be done. Realize though that you will need to pull the carbs back off to put it on and then gets the carbs back on afterwards. Not alot fo fun, but again, can be done.

          Enjoy!!

You may or may not need to rejet with pods.Thats a debate in itself.
I do know that the one I have run with pods was louder and didn't have the same smooth all the way through from low rpm to wide open throttle action.
Although jetting and tweaking will fix that,it is a pain.
The air box is a puzzle for sure, but if you have all the pieces it isn't that bad.
A pair of long needle nose plyers is helpful.I did the total disassemble on my first XS11.And I didn't reassemble it for a while and it sucked getting it back together trying to remember how it went.

              Hey Cy,

              Congrats on getting it running!!

There's an exploded view of the airbox on the Yamaha site, along with an online manual, you like puzzles don't you!

As for your clutch, don't know if you already put in NEW OIL or not, but you can put in a few ounces or so of Marvel Mystery Oil, run the engine WITHOUT any load on the engine, no throttle or driving it, just let it warm up, and there's a good chance the MMO will penetrate into the clutches and loosen them up. Then after 5 or so minutes, shut it down and drain, change oil and filter, the oil you get out will probably be VERY DIRTY/BLACK due to the cleaning action of the MMO.

Other's have also suggested with the engine off, putting it in gear and rocking it to try to get the plates to break loose. Good Luck!
