Who knows anything about F-150's?

Hi everyone,

I have a 2006 Ford F-150 and the LED odometer went out on the gauge cluster. Ordinarily I would not care about this but the truck is my daily driver and I must keep milage for job reimbursements, etc.

I know the odometer portion of the gauge cluster is fused with the cigarette lighter and that fuse is OK. So instead of paying lord knows what from a dealership for another gauge cluster, I was thinking of going to a junk yard or on flea bay.

So my question is this, if I get another cluster from somewhere, is it just plug-n-play or will I have to have something done with it at a dealership anyway because of transferring the milage over to the new cluster?

Don't know if this helps, but on my chrysler van, the mileage is stored in the computer. The dash readout is just that, a display. Discovered this when I needed a new computer. Put in a used one from a junker and viola! - my odometer reading dropped about 70k miles.

If it's an '06, isn't it still under warranty?

You can't swap from a junk yard. The IP cluster has its own computer that saves the mileage, and reports that to the main ECM. If these numbers don't match up it won't start. PITA, I know. The only way to replace the IP cluster is to send it to the repair center for a rebild or get one replaced, which they will program the mileage into it. Then the tech has to use the Star tester to tell the ECM its ok to use. Its even a PITA for the techs, and doesn't pay worth a damn either.
EDIT, I need to say that I worked in the Ford dealership up to 2003, so that may have all changed, but with FOrd, its usually to the more complicated end than the simplified end of the spectrum.

No, its no longer in warranty. It is a truck I lease to my company and it gets alot of milage so it is well out of warranty. I did check a few Ford forums but could not get a definate answer. But I suspected what Ivan said so......guess I am going to have to let Ford screw me over.
