  • average miles per year

    Hi
about a month ago I was t-boned in an intersection and my '05 nomad is totalled , I was not the bruising is finally going away . still hurt
Anyway the insurance co wants to deduct money from my settlement because I have "High mileage for the year" 30,000 KM or 18,641 miles I suggested he did not know where his sit down was supposedly 18,560 Km, 11,532 miles is typical (ha) I was wondering if you as a collective would post what mileage you put on per year so I can politely let him know what it is like in the real world.
I thank you very much in advance

Hopefully TC won't post and screw you all up...

I've averaged somewhere @ 25k miles a year the last couple years.

I imagine what they are calling the "Average" rider, is someone who owns a Harley that trailers their bikes to wherever they go, then ride around town. Though.. not really understanding how they can dock you for riding a lot of miles. Seems you go all those miles before an accident would give you more experience.

What does fixing a bike or totalling one out have to do with how many miles you rode it? Might try telling them that on AVERAGE.. all you do is 11-12k miles and this year was just a fluke. Insurance companies are the biggest crooks next to the government. Glad you're OK though.

Well, they say the average for a cage is 1000 miles/month, or 12k miles per year. However, many motorcyclists would look at a bike with 30k miles, and think the bike was on it's last legs. This last year was my very first year riding, and I have a VERY short commute (1.3 miles). I rode just about every day I possibly could, and managed to rack up almost 4000 miles in that year.

I've put on about 11,000 miles so far this year and riding season isn't nearly over yet...

Actually, the more I think about it... the more I think it might be more around 12,000 miles or better at the moment...

        Glad you're okay!

I do about 20,000 miles per year between two bikes. MOST of it is on my "daily ride", about 15K to 17K.
I would tell the insurance company you want to ADD money too the settlement because the person who hit you is an idiot, and they insured him! I would then politely tell them you will be talking with a "professional" about the action of their company.....
IF the DO NOT offer what YOU think is fair, tell them in NO UNCERTAIN TERMS! You do NOT have to take what they want to offer, and if you balk, they WILL offer more to keep out of the court systems. At least, it seems to work that way down here!

That is still a "low mileage" XS1100.
Not unusual to get over 50/60,000 miles before a serious engine repair might be needed. I've got one with over 55,000 and it runs great and has never had the head off. It has the quietest top end of all my XSes present and past. Think the engine might finally be broke in..

                  My thought

Hey Jim, glad you're on the mend.
I was thinking if you looked up similar makes and models that are up for sale in Southern Ontario it might give you a better idea of what the average rider puts on a bike in our climate. It might even give you some ammo to use against the insurance company.
From what I have seen, the average pleasure only rider would put on about 5,000 km per year on big cruiser. Anything lower than that I would consider a low mileage bike.
                  Good Luck. Rick
