    Possible speedo solution...

What would be wrong with buying a speedo and tach from autometer or the like, and using a pulse generator to make a speed signal and having a calibrated speedo with a matching tach?

It would cost a couple hundred bucks, which would be the first obstacle, but I think it could be worth it.

    Check this out Ivan,

    $149

I may be going this route down the road, has everything, adjustable sensors, magnetic sending unit, they even sell magnetic bolts for brake discs for the sensor...would be a very low cost, clean installation. Replaces speedo, tach, and pilot box. You could even source an under-plug temp sensor and get head temp on some models.

Looks pretty cool, be nice if they made an electronic analog set though. I am kinda partial to the sweep of the needle on acceleration.

They're coming out with one with an analog tach sometime this year...I'll probably wait for that one myself..check out their site further, you'll see it.

So, would the fuel gauge work with the standard or maxim sending unit?

Oh, and the gear indicator, that would be trick.

Fuel gauge should be easy! both bikes use a large variable resister for the sending unit, like almost every other fuel tank. Just set the high and low marks, and your good to go. The gear indicator may be a little harder, as I think you would have to put a pickup type coil close to the "star" wheel on the end of the shift drum. But then, I could be wrong, there may be an easier way ...

              From their website:
Three options for fuel meter input resistance: 100, 250, and 510 Ohm. The fuel gauge will disapper when unit detects that fuel sensor is not connected.
The sending unit on our bikes (the standard) is 75-85ohms empty, 6-10ohms full, so it should be pretty close set at 100oohms, or ..you could add resistance and use one of the higher resistance settings.

Not quite sure how I would go about using the gear indicator, have to look into that.

Easy to get a temp sensor to go into the oil cooler line, and under one of the plugs, so you couuld also have an oil temp, or a head temp displayed. It has provisions for 2 temp sensors. Also has a voltage display.

Semms to me you get a lot for the money with these guys.

                Serendipity!

                Hi Guy,
                thanks for the link.
We have 3 XSes and a BSA with only one working speedo between them.
(Hey Dad, is it my turn for the speedo yet?
No, shaddup and follow a truck.)
And if you think a used working XS speedo is expensive you should try buying one for a Britbike.

                    Fred,

My bike is Canadian, a 78E.

I have the speedo and tach from it and it's got less than 4,000km on it. Can't say for sure it works (never used it), but is in good shape. If you want it PM me an offer.

Hi Guy and thanks for the offer,
alas that all our XSes need the round gauges so the rectangular ones won't do.
It's an odd quirk that here in metric Canada our sole surviving speedo is a US model 120mph unit from an XS650.
Ah WTF, if you can't multiply by 6 in your head you shouldn't be driving anyway, eh?
