Hey Bottle - I can understand, as a new member here, how you might have taken TC's post as a little over-the-top. However, be aware that he is one of THE most knowledgable members on this forum. Try not to take the posts too personally. This is usually a great place, with tons of respectable folks, most willing to drop their world to help another guy they've never even met. Nobody's trying to preach to you. I'd suggest a few searches on this forum about whatever your question might be, and chances are, you'll find DAYS worth of reading on whatever it is.

To answer your question though (and I am no electronics expert), the automotive flashers just don't work with the electrical system on these bikes. I don't know why, but I have tried going to Autozone and buying a possible replacement. There are several that LOOK like they should work, but they just don't.

welcome aboard. i too am new to all this,just put ur helmet on ya might need it...lol pick up an xj 2morow. and have to dive into trany so i feel yer pain brother.my most important bit is just don't get discouraged. these toy's can have a mind of there own on occasion.just talk softly n give a fresh coat of paint it all works out in the end. besides you got the best tunners on earth right at your keyboard tips.So enjoy have fun and stay safe.

He's not preaching, but trying to make sure you understand what has been tried here and what works and what doesn't. The pinout and purpose of the three prongs on the XS flasher and on an automotive three prong flasher is totally different. The third prong is an enabler circuit, and the actual flasher is just two prongs, so a two prong automotive is the key, and I have found that with incandescent bulbs at least that both mechanical and electronic two prong flashers work fine. This may not be true for LED bulbs, as the current draw may actually be too low to activate them, but the electronic ones will work fine.

y'know, I don't read that into TC's post at all. What I read was good advice.
Ask first. No matter what, someone on this list has most likely tried it before and to find out "that don't work" before you spend a fortune on e-bay parts could be a good thing.

I got to be too chicken to solo a 600lb bike some years back.
Hanging a sidecar on the brute when you get too frail to hold her up can add decades to your riding years.
Hanging a sidecar on right now is a good thing in itself.

Just want to say thanks again for all the advice. I did do a great deal of reading today. So much information on these bikes, I love it.

I decided to switch everything to LEDs and use an electronic flasher. I ordered a fusebox from TC so I will be replacing that. I ordered a fork bar from tkat. In a few months when I have more money I will probably get stainless lines and do the final drive conversion as well... haha, so much you can do... going to keep me busy this winter.

I got factory handlebar and 140mph speedometer off of ebay today as well as a center console just because the letters are worn off on mine . Also ordered a new right hand switch because the starter button is broken and temporarily rigged.

Sunday I am going to look at the shift return spring... after reading the article on it I am positive that is the problem. Where could I get another spring? Also noticed today that the side cover that locks over the battery is broken. I would like to get another but they seem expensive online so I am going to check the cycle yard next week.

Hey Bottle and Jeffrey,

Welcome to you both!

Now bottle, if you slow down, re-read Bug's post #7, you'll see near the end that he tells you that you need a 2 PRONG flasher, either thermal IF you are sure you have the correct bulbs....27 watt turn signals so that they will draw the proper amount of current to heat up the flasher to flash.....
Or...you can put on an electronic type, either with regular bulbs, or LEDs if you like, BUT YOU NEED TO USE A 2 PRONG Flasher...even though the plug is 3 prongs. Auto flasher's won't work with the self cancelling control unit, the only style that will work are the 2 prong, and you will have to try it 1 of 2 ways to find out which way will make it work!

I'm not yelling , just trying to be emphatic about the info that is told to you is from YEARS of experience with these machines from the members here. Most things like alternate parts have been tried, and for the most part we know what usually will work and what won't. Every now and then, we get a nice surprise....see the XS750 Final Drive Mod for one example!

So...please take some time, read thru the TECH TIPS on the repairs, mods, maintanence of these machines BEFORE you attempt even simple things....
like the cam chain tensioner setting....or you can severely damage your engine and end up with a boat anchor!

The return spring can still be got from Yamaha. It is also not costly.
